The College of Engineering is carrying out large-scale national projects worth more than 70 billion won; based on this, it is nurturing talented people with creative problem-solving and glocal capabilities as the source of national competitiveness in the era of knowledge economy. In addition, through active industry-university cooperation with the region, it is becoming a central axis of research in the Gwangyang Bay area.
The School of Artificial Intelligence Engineering (ICT Convergence Engineering) is a new start with the combination of the Information and Communication Engineering Major and the Multimedia Engineering Major to train AI (ICT Convergence) experts who can actively and effectively respond to the rapidly changing information and communication technology. ICT (information and communications technology) is a technology field that is receiving the most attention at present and is playing an increasingly important role in our daily life, being applied in various ways in real life. We keep computers such as personal PCs near us all the time, as well as portable devices such as smartphones and tabs, and search for and utilize various kinds of information through the web or YouTube. This trend is further developing, leading to the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) wherein more and more devices are equipped with the Internet. The technology, which effectively communicates a huge amount of data generated by various IoT devices and stores and processes the collected data, is currently at a level that enables application to any field. Therefore, securing technology that can lead by preoccupying this field is extremely important not only for national competitiveness but also for individual competitiveness. Around the world, big data, deep learning, machine learning, IoT, etc. are emerging as the most important technology fields and developing very rapidly. Korea is also making extensive investments in these fields; through this, it is expected to play a role in keeping pace with the world trends and further leading the world. This can be confirmed not only in the government but also in the activities of various companies such as Samsung Electronics, Naver, and Kakao. Big data, deep learning, IoT, etc. have values and goals for research and learning in their academic fields themselves, playing a key role in convergence with various industries in particular. The future society requires talent with self-learning ability to acquire and apply new knowledge on their own; instead of combining different technologies into one technology, we need convergence technology that creates technological added value through new perspectives and imagination based on existing knowledge. Therefore, the convergence of cutting-edge ICT technology and various industries has become an important agenda for education in Korea and is a global trend. It is very important to acquire core skills necessary for ICT and to have convergence skills that can be applied to other fields, and it will provide many opportunities for career selection. In particular, cutting-edge ICT technology plays a very important role in various fields such as smart farms, production and management of new and renewable energy, and autonomous vehicles, and it is producing remarkable results. Our university has also selected a smart farm that combines cutting-edge ICT technology and agriculture as a specialised field for the school, and it is making aggressive investments. Moreover, in line with this convergence era, our school is actively carrying out various research and education projects and producing excellent results.
