Introduction

The Sunchon National University Mueum was established in September 1987, as the first museum on the east side of Jeollanamdo Province. Since the establishment, we have researched local heritages, given museum lectures and opened permanent exhibitions to contribute to historical and cultural education about the east side of Jeollanamdo Province. Wh have also published books and reports to increase and promote understanding of out collections for experts and the public. As the central museum of the east of Jeollanamdo Province, we are going to strive to contribute to the development of cultural education and enjoyment in the local community.

History

  • 1987

    ‘Sunchon National University Affiliated Museum’ established

  • 1991

    Name changed to ‘Sunchon National University Museum’

  • 1999

    Took possession of GangUn Choi SeungHyo’s collections

  • 2011

    Archaeology Gallery opened

  • 2009

    Moved to New building and re-opened
    Archaeology Gallery, Geomdan Mountain Fortress Gallery and GangUn Choi SeungHyo’s Gallery opened

  • 2010

    Education · Activity Room opened

  • 2014

    Maecheon HwangHyeon Galley opened

Archaeology Gallery

Archaeology Gallery introduces the remains and objects from the paleolithic age to the Joseon Dynasty. This gallery provides a general understanding of the ancient culture of the east of Jeollanamdo Province.

Geomdan Mountain Fortress Gallery

The Geomdan Mountain Fortress is a mountain fortress of the late Baekje period and was built in the 6th century. We displayed the remains of wells and objects discovered

GangUn Choi SeungHyo’s Gallery

GangUn Choi SeungHyo(1917~1999) collected approximately 6,000 pieces of collections including various paintings, departed patriots and writings of independence fighters and official documents of the Joseon Dynasty in his life. His collections were donated by his family to the museum in 2000.

Maecheon HwangHyeon Galley

Maecheon Hwang Hyeon (1855-1910) was a representative author and an intellectual at the end of Joseon Dynasty and fought for independence of Korea from Japan. The gallery exhibits his personal articles as well as the writings, books, and letters that he exchanged with his acquaintances
