The College of Education nurtures competent secondary school teachers who can contribute to the development of a democratic society by acquiring integrated thinking ability based on the theory necessary for each major area and practical educational skills related to the school field with a firm sense of duty as an educator. In addition, thanks to our well-organised educational system, we boast of the highest passing rate in the recruitment examination in the region, and we are also serving as a cornerstone of national education in each field of society.

- The Department of Social Education at Sunchon National University was established in 1982 when Sunchon National University was launched as a four-year university. From the first graduates to the graduates in 1992, they were automatically appointed as secondary school teachers. After that, however, they have been advancing to secondary school upon passing the secondary school teacher selection test. The passing rate in the teacher certification examination of the Department of Social Education is the highest in the country, thereby raising the status of Sunchon University’s College of Education.
- The Department of Social Education aims to nurture excellent and exemplary secondary social studies teachers with professional knowledge and teaching ability necessary for democratic citizenship education. The curriculum of the Department of Social Education consists of Social Science Education, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Law, Geography, History, etc., and students extensively learn social sciences in general. Therefore, after graduating, students advance not only as middle and high school teachers but also to education administrative positions, educational professions, general administrative officials, and various general corporations according to their aptitudes and preferences.
- Although secondary school teachers are popular as a profession, the number of social studies teachers is decreasing as the school-age population is decreasing owing to the low birth rate. In preparation for this, our Department of Social Education is making efforts to diversify career paths after graduation, such as advancing into educational administration, education professional, and general administrative positions, and the results have been continuously expanding in recent years.
- In order to increase the passing rate in the teacher certification examination, our Department of Social Education offers special lectures by department professors, experts, and senior candidates. In addition, under the guidance of academic advisers and financial support of the university, students organize their own study groups for cooperative learning, and they can study using accommodations for students studying for exams within the university. On the other hand, every year since 1993, “Sihyeonje,” a comprehensive academic event that focuses on social education and educational problems hosted by the student council, is held as a comprehensive academic event where students face social phenomena in Korea and propose their own solutions through direct social research jointly with students. Through this, students not only expand the basic perspective on society that prospective teachers should have and enhance their abilities but also promote friendship among classmates and share the excitement of college life.
