Department introduction

The educational purpose of the Department of Biology is to nurture competent talents who will professionally perform the necessary functions in research and industrial fields by educating various fields of life science. The core major competencies we want to cultivate are field understanding ability, field practical ability, problem solving and convergence ability, etc. As the demand for manpower in the bio industry is expected to increase gradually in the future, we provide customized training courses to industries with improved field suitability and organize the curriculum by reflecting the needs of related industries according to the rapidly changing development trend of the biological industry. Our department’s curriculum is largely composed of zoology, botany, and microbiology, and we provide lectures on taxonomy, morphology, physiology, cytology, genetics, embryology, and immunology to understand life phenomena. In order to investigate them at the molecular level, subjects such as biochemistry and molecular biology are being taught. For students’ experiments and practices, we have cell chemistry labs, microbiology labs, molecular genetics labs, plant phylogenetic labs, plant molecular physiology labs, functional genomics labs, animal physiology labs, biological materials engineering labs, general biology labs, specimen labs, low-temperature rooms, and instrument rooms. We also have more than 100 kinds of laboratory equipment, including ultra-high-speed centrifuges and spectrophotometers. Since the graduate school offers master’s and doctoral programs, more in-depth study and research of theories by major are being conducted. In addition, the graduate school of education has a biology major, so it is possible to acquire a teacher’s certificate after graduation. Graduates go on to graduate school for more in-depth academic research or advance to environment-related administrative agencies, biological research institutes, and general corporations such as pharmaceutical and food companies.
