- 9월 24일부터 10월 10일까지 전 국민 대상 교명 공모 -

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)와 국립목포대학교(총장 송하철)가 대학통합 추진에 따라 새로운 통합대학의 교명을 공모한다고 22일 밝혔다.

양 대학은 지난해 11월 대학통합 추진에 공식 합의했으며, 현재 교육부에 제출할 통합 수정신청서 작성을 진행 중이다. 이번 교명 공모는 전남 거점 국립대학으로서의 새로운 비전과 정체성을 국민과 함께 고민하고, 그 의미를 사회적으로 확산하는 데 의의가 있다.

공모전은 오는 9월 24일부터 10월 10일까지(17일간) 온라인으로 진행되며, 전 국민 누구나 양 대학 홈페이지(www.mokpo.ac.kr 및 www.scnu.ac.kr)에 안내된 링크(https://forms.gle/wwnVbgwGApjkBkPz6) 및 QR코드를 통해 참여할 수 있다. 각 대학 구성원은 ‘별도 구글폼(국립순천대)’ 또는‘대학 자체 모바일 플랫폼(국립목포대)’을 통해서도 응모가 가능하다.

양 대학은 교명 공모와 동시에 외부 전문가 컨설팅도 병행해 다양한 의견을 폭넓게 수렴할 계획이다. 제안된 교명은 ▲내부 구성원 공모안 ▲전 국민 공모안 ▲외부 전문가 컨설팅 추천안으로 구분해 심사한다.

내부 공모안은 각 대학이 구성한 교명선정위원회에서 자체 심사하고, 전 국민 공모안과 외부 전문가 추천안은 양 대학 위원이 동수로 참여하는 공동 심사 방식으로 평가한다. 심사 기준은 ▲통합 상징성 ▲독창성 ▲활용성 ▲전달성 등이며, 상표권 침해 등 법적 문제가 있는 명칭은 심사 대상에서 제외된다.

시상 규모는 부문별로 ▲대상 1명(100만 원), ▲최우수상 2명(각 50만 원), ▲우수상 3명(각 20만 원)이며, 추첨을 통해 다수의 참가자에게 기프티콘도 제공할 예정이다.

국립순천대학교 이병운 총장은 “이번 통합대학 교명 공모는 단순히 이름을 선정하는 것이 아닌 통합대학의 비전과 철학, 국민 여러분의 기대를 담는 계기가 될 것이다”라며, “전남의 인재를 키우고, 지역을 넘어 세계로 나아갈 통합대학의 새로운 역사에 국민 여러분의 관심과 성원을 부탁드린다”라고 말했다.

Sunchon National University and Mokpo National University Launch Public Contest for New Integrated University Name

- Nationwide naming contest to be held from September 24 to October 10 -

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) and Mokpo National University (President Song Ha-chul) announced on the 22nd that they will hold a public contest to select the new name of their integrated university, following their ongoing efforts toward institutional merger.

The two universities officially agreed to pursue integration in November 2024 and are currently preparing a revised integration application to be submitted to the Ministry of Education. This naming contest carries significant meaning as it seeks to establish a new vision and identity for a flagship national university in Jeollanam-do, while encouraging broad public participation and awareness.

The contest will run online for 17 days, from September 24 to October 10, and is open to all citizens nationwide. Participants can apply via the links and QR codes posted on both universities’ websites (www.mokpo.ac.kr and www.scnu.ac.kr) or through the official Google Form (for SCNU) and the mobile platform (for MNU) designated for university members.

Alongside the public contest, the universities will also gather input through consultations with external experts to ensure a wide range of perspectives. Proposed names will be reviewed in three categories: internal submissions from university members, public submissions from the general public, and recommendations from external consultants.

Internal submissions will be reviewed by each university’s naming committee, while public and expert recommendations will be jointly evaluated by a panel of equal representatives from both universities. Evaluation criteria will include symbolic value of integration, originality, applicability, and clarity, while names with potential legal issues such as trademark infringement will be excluded.

Prizes will be awarded as follows: one Grand Prize winner (KRW 1,000,000), two Excellence Award winners (KRW 500,000 each), and three Merit Award winners (KRW 200,000 each). In addition, multiple participants will be randomly selected to receive gift vouchers.

President Lee Byung-woon of Sunchon National University stated, “This naming contest is not merely about selecting a title but about capturing the vision, philosophy, and expectations of the integrated university. We ask for the public’s active interest and support as we work to build a new institution that nurtures talent in Jeollanam-do and expands its reach beyond the region to the global stage.”
