- 외국인 유학생 대상 조기 정착 지원…지역사회와 상생하는 글로컬 교육 실현

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 법무부가 주관하는 ‘이민자 조기적응프로그램’ 운영기관으로 최종 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

‘이민자 조기적응프로그램’은 한국에 처음 입국한 외국인을 대상으로, 한국 사회의 기본 제도와 법질서, 필수 생활 정보를 교육하는 프로그램이다.

이번 선정은 외국인 유학생의 초기 정착을 지원하는 제도적 기반을 확보했다는 점에서 의미가 크다. 국립순천대는 오는 2027년 12월까지 법무부 파견 전문 강사가 진행하는 공통 교육과 더불어, 취·창업 선후배 유학생 멘토링, 동아리·기숙사 생활 안내 등 체계적인 적응 교육과정을 추가로 제공할 예정이다.

국립순천대는 교육부 ‘글로컬대학30’ 사업에 선정된 이후, 지역사회와의 연계 협력과 국제화 기반을 꾸준히 강화해 오고 있다.

특히, 국제교류교육본부는 외국인 행정인력이 상주하는 ‘정주지원센터’를 운영하며, 유학생들이 낯선 환경 속에서도 안정적으로 생활하고 학업에 몰입할 수 있도록 다양한 정착 지원 활동을 지속해 왔다. 

최근에는 유관기관과 연계한 지역 탐방 프로그램, 지역 기업 견학과 취업 컨설팅, ‘지역 문제 해결’을 주제로 한 문화 교류 행사 등을 통해 유학생과 가족, 지역사회 구성원까지 아우르는 적응 지원으로 확대하고 있다.

서강석 국제교류교육본부장은 “외국인 유학생들이 단순한 방문자가 아니라 지역사회의 일원으로 안정적으로 정착할 수 있도록, 내실 있는 교육을 운영하겠다”라며, “앞으로도 지역과 함께 성장하고 세계와 소통하는 진정한 글로컬 대학으로서 책임을 다하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

Sunchon National University Designated as Official Provider of Immigration Early Adaptation Program

- Strengthening institutional support for international students’ successful settlement in Korea ?

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) announced that it has been officially designated by the Ministry of Justice as a provider of the Immigration Early Adaptation Program.

The Immigration Early Adaptation Program is designed for newly arrived foreigners in Korea and offers essential education on Korea’s basic social systems, legal order, and necessary everyday information.

This designation is particularly meaningful as it establishes a solid institutional foundation to support the early settlement of international students. Through the end of December 2027, Sunchon National University plans to offer not only the standard curriculum taught by instructors dispatched by the Ministry of Justice, but also a range of supplementary programs such as peer mentoring among international students for employment and entrepreneurship, and guidance on student clubs and dormitory life.

Since being selected for the Ministry of Education’s Glocal University 30 project, Sunchon National University has continuously strengthened its internationalization strategies and cooperative ties with the local community.

Notably, the university’s Office of International Affairs operates a Local Settlement Support Center, staffed by full-time international administrative personnel, to assist students in adapting to life in Korea and focusing on their studies in a stable environment.

In recent years, the university has expanded its adaptation support to include international students’ families and local community members, by offering cultural exchange programs such as regional exploration activities, visits to local companies, employment consultations, and events centered on solving community issues.

Seo Gang-seok, Director of the Office of International Affairs, stated, “We aim to provide meaningful and well-structured education so that international students are not merely visitors, but become stable members of our community,” adding, “We will continue to fulfill our responsibilities as a true glocal university that grows with the local community and communicates with the world.”
