- 선교사 활동 기록 속 지역사회와의 관계 조명, 개별 영역 중심의 세분화된 연구 시도

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운) 인문학술원은 연세대학교 신과대학 한국기독교문화연구소와 함께 오는 7월 18일(금), 인문예술대 1층 교수회의실에서 ‘미국 남장로회 선교사 편지와 지역사회’를 주제로 공동학술대회를 개최한다.

이번 학술대회는 국립순천대 인문학술원 권오수·예대열 연구교수의 사회로 진행되며, 총 4편의 발표가 예정되어 있다. 발표 논문은 ▲남장로회 초기 여성 선교사들의 한(恨) 및 한국인 인식(이재근 광신대 교수) ▲프레스톤(변요한) 목사의 미국 남장로회 인적 네트워크(송상훈 전주신흥고 교사) ▲미국 소재 남장로교 한국선교 자료의 현황과 특징(한미경 연세대 교수) ▲미국 남장로회 순천 교육시설의 공간 변화와 특징(우승완 국립순천대 연구교수) 등으로, 선교사 활동을 지역사회 맥락에서 심층적으로 분석한다. 논문 발표 이후에는 허경진 연세대 교수, 윤현명 전 국립순천대 연구교수 등이 토론자로 참여할 예정이다.

강성호 국립순천대 인문학술원장은 “이번 공동학술대회는 기존의 선교단체 보고서 중심 연구에서 벗어나, 개별 선교사와 활동 영역을 중심으로 보다 세분화된 연구를 시도하는 계기가 될 것”이라며 학술적 의의를 강조했다.

한편, 국립순천대 인문학술원은 2018년 ‘종교역사문화센터’를 부설로 설립해 지역의 종교 및 역사문화에 대한 연구를 이어오고 있다. 2024년에는 남장로회 선교영역을 호남권으로 확장해 전북대학교에서 학술대회를 개최했으며, 올해 1월에는 ‘기독교 연구총서’ 5부작을 완간했다. 현재 여섯 번째 총서 발간도 준비 중이다. 인문학술원은 2017년 교육부 대학중점연구소지원사업 선정, 2022년 한국연구재단 등재후보지 선정, 2023년 인문사회연구소지원사업 선정 등 성과를 이어가며 호남지역 대표 인문학 종합연구기관으로 자리매김하고 있다.

Sunchon National University Humanities Institute to Host Joint Academic Conference on Letters from Southern Presbyterian Missionaries in Korea

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) Humanities Institute will co-host a joint academic conference with the Institute for the Study of Korean Christian Culture at Yonsei University’s College of Theology under the theme “Letters from Southern Presbyterian Missionaries and the Local Community.” The conference will take place on July 18 (Thursday) at the Faculty Meeting Room on the first floor of the College of Humanities and Arts at Sunchon National University.

The event will be moderated by Professors Kwon Oh-soo and Ye Dae-yeol of the Humanities Institute and will feature four research presentations: ▲ “Perceptions of Han and Koreans by Early Female Southern Presbyterian Missionaries” by Professor Lee Jae-geun (Kwangshin University) ▲ “The Southern Presbyterian Network of Reverend Preston (Byun Yo-han)” by Teacher Song Sang-hoon (Jeonju Shinhung High School) ▲ “Current Status and Features of Southern Presbyterian Mission Archives in the United States” by Professor Han Mi-kyung (Yonsei University) ▲ “Spatial Transformations and Characteristics of Southern Presbyterian Educational Facilities in Suncheon” by Professor Woo Seung-wan (Sunchon National University).

A discussion session will follow, joined by Professor Heo Kyung-jin (Yonsei University) and former Sunchon National University researcher Yoon Hyun-myung. Professor Kang Sung-ho, Director of the Humanities Institute, stated, “This joint academic conference marks a shift from general mission report-based studies toward more refined and segmented research focusing on individual missionaries and their spheres of influence.”

Since establishing its affiliated Center for Religious History and Culture in 2018, the Humanities Institute has conducted in-depth research on regional religious and historical culture. In 2024, the institute expanded the scope of its academic conference to the Honam region with a session held at Jeonbuk National University, and in January it completed a five-volume Christian Studies Monograph Series. The sixth volume is currently in preparation. The institute continues to establish itself as a leading comprehensive research institution for the humanities in the Honam region, having been selected for the Ministry of Education’s Core Research Institute Support Project in 2017, listed as a candidate for Korea Research Foundation indexing in 2022, and selected again for the Ministry’s Humanities and Social Research Institute Support Project in 2023.
