- 대통령 직속 국정기획위원회 ‘모두의 광장’에 전남 국립의대 설립 제안

- 전남 의료 인프라 확충과 지역 주민 건강권 보장을 위한 필요성 강조

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 7월 9일(수) 순천 호남호국기념관에서 개최된 대통령 직속 국정기획위원회 주관 ‘모두의 광장’ 행사에 참여해, 전라남도에 국립의과대학을 신설할 필요성을 담은 정책 제안을 했다고 밝혔다.

이날 국립순천대는 “전남 국립의대 신설을 통한 의료인력 양성과 지역민 건강 증진”을 주제로 정책 제안서를 발표하며, 전남 지역의 의료 접근성 개선과 공공의료 기반 확대의 필요성을 강조했다. 특히 전라남도가 현재까지 의과대학이 없는 유일한 광역지자체임을 언급하며, 국립대학을 중심으로 한 지속가능한 의료 인재 양성 모델의 필요성을 제시했다.

박병희 국립순천대학교 의과대학설립추진단장은 “전남 180만 도민은 상급종합병원 부재 등으로 필수의료 서비스 접근에 심각한 제한을 받고, 이는 지역 의료 공백으로 이어지고 있다”고 말했다. 이어 “특히, 전남 동부권은 여수국가산단, 포스코 광양제철소 등 중화학 산업이 밀집한 지역 특성상 산업재해 위험도 높은 만큼, 이에 대응할 수 있는 공공의료 기반 확충이 절실하다”라고 덧붙였다.

박병희 단장은 또한 “지역의 우수 인재가 지역에서 교육받고 지역 의료를 책임지는 선순환 구조를 만들기 위해, 지역의사제 등 공공성을 높인 국립의대를 국립순천대학교에 설립한다면 전남은 물론 하동, 남해 등 경남 서부권의 의료 부족 문제까지 해결할 수 있다”라며, 정부의 적극적인 관심과 검토를 요청했다.

한편, 국립순천대학교는 국립목포대학교, 전라남도와 함께 통합의대 설립 공동준비위원회를 출범하여 운영하고 있으며 정부·국회를 대상으로 한 설득 활동도 적극적으로 이어오고 있다. 이번 정책 제안은 지역 주민의 건강권 보장과 함께, 공공의료 인재 양성과 지역 의료격차 해소를 위한 새로운 정책적 접근을 제시한 것으로, 국립순천대는 향후 전라남도 국립의대 설립을 위한 다각적인 노력을 지속할 것을 밝혔다.

Sunchon National University Proposes Establishment of National Medical School in Jeollanam-do
- Policy proposal presented at the Presidential Commission’s “Agora for All” event to address regional healthcare disparity

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) announced that it submitted a formal policy proposal on July 9 during the “Agora for All” event, hosted by the Presidential Commission on National Agenda, calling for the establishment of a national medical school in Jeollanam-do.

Under the theme “Training Healthcare Professionals and Improving Public Health through the Establishment of a National Medical School in Jeollanam-do,” SCNU highlighted the urgent need to expand public healthcare access and strengthen the medical infrastructure in the region.

The university emphasized that Jeollanam-do remains the only province in South Korea without a medical school and proposed the creation of a sustainable healthcare workforce model led by a national university.

Professor Park Byung-hee, Head of SCNU’s Medical School Establishment Task Force, stated, “With no tertiary general hospital in the province, 1.8 million residents in Jeollanam-do face serious challenges in accessing essential medical services. This gap results in significant healthcare disparities across the region.”

He added, “The eastern part of the province, home to major industrial complexes such as the Yeosu National Industrial Complex and POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks, is especially vulnerable to occupational hazards. Establishing a public medical infrastructure capable of addressing these risks is urgently needed.”

Professor Park further proposed a regionally focused model where local talents are educated within the region and go on to serve their communities. “By establishing a national medical school at SCNU under a public physician system, we can address medical shortages not only in Jeollanam-do but also in neighboring areas such as Hadong and Namhae in western Gyeongsangnam-do,” he said, urging the government to give serious consideration to the initiative.

Sunchon National University is currently working in collaboration with Mokpo National University and Jeollanam-do Province through a joint preparatory committee for the establishment of the integrated medical school. The university has also been actively engaging with government ministries and the National Assembly to advocate for the proposal.

This policy initiative aims to ensure healthcare equity for local residents, foster public medical professionals, and reduce regional medical disparities. SCNU affirmed its commitment to pursuing the establishment of a national medical school in Jeollanam-do through continued, multifaceted efforts.
