고베 국제심포지움 논문 발표·몽골 두루미축제 공연… AI 기반 흑두루미 탐조 연구도 병행

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운) 컴퓨터교육과·융합예술학과 전영국 교수가 최근 일본과 몽골에서 잇따라 생태예술 및 문화교류 활동을 펼치며 주목을 받고 있다.

전영국 교수는 지난 6월 28일 일본 고베시에서 열린 국제심포지엄에 참석해, 태국 치앙마이대학교 롱후(Rong Hu) 연구원과 공동으로 ‘한·일·중 두루미 서사와 애니메이션 기반 퍼포먼스 콘텐츠 탐구’ 사례를 발표하고 흑두루미춤을 시연했다. 본 심포지엄은 일본한국문화학회와 한국국제문화교류학회가 공동 주최했으며, 고베·오사카 인근 대학교 교수 및 석박사 과정생들이 참석해 다양한 발표와 토론, 문화탐방을 진행했다. 전영국 교수는 교토 고려미술관과 인형극 예술가 이이무로씨가 운영하는 아틀리에를 방문하여 두루미 서사를 주제로 한 국제문화교류 가능성도 타진했다.

또한, 전영국 교수는 6월 14일부터 15일까지 몽골 WSCC의 초청을 받아 헨티 아이막 바이더르(Binder)에서 열린 두루미축제에 참가해 ‘순천만 흑두루미춤’을 공연했다. 이번 축제는 몽골 니얌바 박사의 기획으로 열렸으며, 현지 예술단 및 초등학생 무용단과의 문화교류가 함께 이루어졌다. 이어진 일정에서는 재두루미, 시베리아흰두루미 등이 서식하는 몽골의 이탄습지를 탐방하며, 습지 보전을 위한 과학적 조사 방법과 탄소배출 저감 연구에도 참여했다. 중국 포양호 및 내몽골 지역 두루미 전문가들과는 향후 국제공동연구 협의를 진행했다.

한편, 전영국 교수는 국내에서도 생태예술과 연구 활동을 활발하게 펼치고 있다. 지난 5월 30일에는 춘천세계인형극제 오프 페스티벌에서 1인극 ‘솔섬의 비밀(루미와 뚱이)’을 선보였다. 이 작품은 순천만 흑두루미와 짱뚱어가 천적 관계 속에서 서로를 도우며 우정을 쌓아가는 이야기로 관객의 큰 호응을 받았고, 국내외 인형극 전문가들과 콘텐츠 교류의 장도 마련했다. 또한, 순천시 순천만보전과와의 협력을 통해 석사과정생 성홍주와 함께 드론 촬영 영상을 기반으로 인공지능을 활용한 흑두루미 개체수 분석 소프트웨어 개발에도 참여하며 예술과 과학의 융합적 연구 성과를 확장하고 있다.

국립순천대 전영국 교수는 “앞으로 일본, 몽골, 중국, 태국, 베트남, 인천, 철원군 등 국내외 생태예술 전문가들과의 협업을 바탕으로, 두루미 서사를 활용한 춤, 인형극, IT 기반 융합 생태예술 콘텐츠 창작을 지속할 계획”이라며, “이러한 활동이 글로컬 콘텐츠 개발의 성과로 이어져, 매년 2월 2일 세계 습지의 날을 기념해 우리 대학에서 열리는 생태예술 국제포럼의 질적 향상에도 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다”라고 밝혔다.

Professor Youngguk Jun of Sunchon National University Presents “Crane Dance” in Japan and Mongolia

From a research presentation at Kobe symposium to a performance at Mongolia’s Crane Festival 

- Bridging ecological art and international cultural exchange through AI and performance

Professor Youngguk Jun of the Department of Computer Education and the Interdisciplinary Arts Program at Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) has recently garnered attention for his active engagement in ecological art and international cultural exchange through performances and collaborative research in Japan and Mongolia.

On June 28, 2025, Professor Jun participated in an international symposium held in Kobe, Japan, where he presented a joint case study with Rong Hu, a multicultural education researcher at Chiang Mai University in Thailand. The presentation, titled “Exploration of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese Crane Narratives and Performance Content Based on Animation,” was accompanied by a live demonstration of the Black-faced Crane Dance.

The symposium was co-hosted by the Japan Society for Korean Culture and the Korean Society for International Cultural Exchange. Professors and graduate students from universities in the Kobe and Osaka regions participated in academic presentations, discussions, and cultural visits. As part of his visit, Professor Jun also explored the potential for international exchange projects centered on crane narratives through meetings at the Koryo Museum in Kyoto and a puppet theater atelier operated by Japanese artist Iimuro.

From June 14 to 15, Professor Jun was invited by the WSCC (Wetlands Science and Conservation Center) to perform the “Suncheon Bay Black-faced Crane Dance” at the Crane Festival held in Binder, Khentii Province, Mongolia. The event, organized by Mongolian conservationist Dr. Nyambayar Batbayar, featured cultural exchanges with local dance troupes and elementary school crane dance teams. During his stay, Professor Jun also participated in ecological fieldwork observing White-naped Cranes and Siberian Cranes inhabiting the peatlands of Mongolia. The program included collaborative research discussions on wetland conservation, carbon emission reduction, and future joint studies with crane researchers from Poyang Lake in China and Inner Mongolia.

In addition to his international engagements, Professor Jun is actively involved in ecological art projects within Korea. On May 30, he performed a one-person puppet play titled The Secret of Solseom (Rumi and Ttungi) at the Off Festival of the Chuncheon World Puppet Festival. The story, featuring the unlikely friendship between a Black-faced Crane and a mudskipper in Suncheon Bay, received positive audience feedback and facilitated creative exchange with domestic and international puppetry artists.

Professor Jun is also expanding interdisciplinary research in collaboration with Suncheon Bay Conservation authorities. Together with master’s student Hongjoo Seong, he is developing AI-assisted software to analyze drone footage and estimate crane populations, contributing to the fusion of environmental science and the arts.

“I plan to continue creating ecological art content such as dance and puppet theater based on crane narratives, integrating IT technologies in collaboration with experts from Japan, Mongolia, China, Thailand, Vietnam, and various regions in Korea, including Incheon and Cheorwon,” said Professor Jun. “I hope these efforts will lead to meaningful glocal content development and contribute to the enrichment of the International Ecological Art Forum held annually at Sunchon National University on World Wetlands Day, February 2.”
