- 국립정원문화원 개원 앞서, 학부생 78명 실습 교육 참여

- 정원 조성 이론·실습 교육과 진로 탐색까지 … 실무 중심 교육 선도

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 원예학전공 학부생 78명이 국내 첫 정원 전문 교육기관인 국립정원문화원(한국수목원정원관리원, 이사장 심상택)의 개원에 앞서, 지역 전문가들과 함께‘정원 조성 현장실습’에 나섰다고 밝혔다.

이번 실습은 국립정원문화원의‘심다보니정원’ 프로그램의 일환으로, 지난 4월 7일과 28일 두 차례에 걸쳐 진행되었다. 국립정원문화원은 정원 분야 인력 양성과 한국형 정원 저변확대 및 문화 확산을 목표로 올해 5월 전라남도 담양군에 문을 열었다.

국립순천대는 지역의 선도 교육기관으로 유관 대학 중 가장 먼저 실무 중심 교육에 참여하며 의미를 더했다. 특히 전문기관과의 협력 교육인 만큼, 정원 조성 이론부터 현장실습, 진로·직업 탐색까지 포괄적으로 구성된 점이 돋보였다.

학생들은 ▲국립정원문화원 소개 및 시설 탐방 ▲정원식물과 조경 이론 교육 ▲팜가든 및 실습정원 조성 실습 ▲정원 관련 진로·취업 상담 등을 이수하고, 전남 지역 현장 전문가들과 함께 직접 정원을 설계하고 꾸미며 실무역량을 길렀다.

실습에 참여한 이유나 학생(원예학전공 4년)은 실습 과정을 촬영한 YTN과의 인터뷰에서“원예학도로서 직접 조성한 정원을 관람객에게 선보일 수 있어 무척 보람차다.”라며, “정원을 만드는 과정 자체가 하나의 배움이자, 사람과 자연을 연결하는 의미 있는 일이라는 걸 깨달았다”라고 소감을 전했다.

원예학전공 장보국 교수는 “이번 현장실습은 학생들이 정원 분야의 전문성과 실무 감각을 넓히는 귀중한 기회였다”라며, “앞으로도 국립정원문화원과의 협력을 지속하며, 학생들이 다양한 정원교육과 현장 프로젝트에 참여할 수 있도록 교수진과 함께 적극 지원하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

Sunchon National University Horticulture Students Participate in Hands-On Garden Design Training Ahead of National Garden Culture Center Opening

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) announced that 78 undergraduate students majoring in Horticulture recently took part in a hands-on garden design training program ahead of the official opening of the National Garden Culture Center (operated by the Korea Arboretum and Garden Institute, Chairman Shim Sang-taek), the nation’s first dedicated garden education institution.

The training, part of the "Gardening Through Planting" program organized by the National Garden Culture Center, was conducted over two sessions on April 7 and 28. The Center officially opened this May in Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do, with the mission of cultivating professionals in the gardening field and promoting the widespread adoption of Korean-style gardens and garden culture.

As a leading regional educational institution, Sunchon National University was the first among related universities to participate in this practical, hands-on program, adding further significance to the initiative. The program was notable for its comprehensive structure, spanning from theoretical instruction and field training to career exploration and job mentoring, thanks to collaboration with a professional institution.

During the program, students engaged in activities including ▲ an introduction to the National Garden Culture Center and a guided tour of its facilities ▲ lectures on garden plants and landscape design theory ▲ practical training in creating a farm garden and demonstration garden ▲ and personalized career counseling related to the gardening industry.

They also gained valuable practical skills by directly planning and constructing gardens in collaboration with field experts from the Jeollanam-do region. Yoo Yuna, a fourth-year Horticulture major who participated in the training, shared her thoughts in an interview with YTN, which covered the program: “As a horticulture student, it was incredibly rewarding to create a garden that will be enjoyed by visitors. I realized that the process of making a garden is not only an opportunity for learning but also a meaningful way to connect people and nature.”

Professor Jang Bo-kook of the Horticulture major commented, “This field training provided students with an invaluable opportunity to enhance both their expertise and practical skills in the gardening field. We plan to continue collaborating with the National Garden Culture Center and will actively support our students’ participation in diverse garden education programs and field projects.”
