- 글로컬대학30 ‘유학생 지역문제해결팀’ 첫 프로젝트, ‘서로의 나라와 문화 소개하기’ 행사 열려

- 다문화 인식 개선부터 정주 여건 해소까지… 연말까지 유학생 주도 문제해결 프로젝트 이어져

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 지난달 30일과 31일, 교내 글로벌카페에서 외국인 유학생과 지역민이 함께한 ‘서로의 나라와 문화 소개하기’ 행사를 개최했다고 밝혔다. 이번 행사는 국립순천대학교 외국인 유학생 지역문제해결팀의 첫 번째 프로젝트로, 유학생과 지역민이 서로의 문화를 이해하고 소통하며 지역 내 다문화 인식을 제고하고자 기획되었다.

‘외국인 유학생 지역문제해결팀’은 글로컬대학30 사업의 일환으로 구성된 팀으로, 다양한 국적과 전공을 가진 유학생 10명을 선발해 연말까지 다문화 관련 지역문제를 해결하는 프로젝트 활동을 진행한다. 문제 인식부터 대응 방안 모색까지 전 과정을 유학생들이 직접 주도하고 기획한다는 점에서 의미가 깊다.

팀원들은 지난 4월 학내 유학생을 대상으로 한 지역문제 인식 조사를 통해 ▲다문화 인식 개선 ▲외국인 일자리 부족 등을 주요 해결 과제로 발굴하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 ‘서로의 나라와 문화 소개하기’ 발표회를 첫 프로젝트로 기획·준비하였다.

이틀간 진행된 행사에는 나이지리아, 몽골, 방글라데시, 우즈베키스탄, 튀르키예, 카메룬, 카자흐스탄 등 팀 소속 외국인 유학생 10명이 발표자로 나섰고, 가나, 미국, 스리랑카, 중국, 파키스탄, 필리핀 등 다양한 국가 출신의 유학생과 한국인 학생, 지역 내 내외국인 주민이 참석해 함께 소통하는 시간을 가졌다.

발표자들은 자국의 음식, 전통 의상, 역사, 사회적 관습 등 문화를 소개했으며, 참석자들은 다양한 문화적 배경에 대한 이해를 넓히고 서로의 차이를 존중하는 계기를 마련했다. 특히 각국의 다문화 정책과 자국 내 한국에 대한 인식도 함께 공유하며, 이번 행사가 단순한 교류를 넘어 지역문제 해결을 위한 실천적 접근이라는 점에서 기존 유학생 행사와 차별화되었다는 평가를 받았다.

방글라데시 출신 컴퓨터공학과 1학년 밀라(Mila) 학생은 “이번 프로젝트를 통해 방글라데시 문화를 직접 소개할 수 있어 뜻깊었다”며, “서로를 이해하고 존중하는 분위기 속에서 많은 새로운 친구들을 사귈 수 있어 앞으로의 활동이 더욱 기대된다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

서강석 국제교류교육본부장은 “외국인 유학생이 주체적으로 지역문제를 발굴하고 해결책을 모색하는 과정을 통해, 유학생 스스로 정주 의식을 높이고 지역 사회와의 연결을 강화할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”라며, “프로젝트 활동이 다문화 공존 사회로 나아가는 중요한 초석이 되길 바라며, 앞으로도 외국인 인재가 지역과 상생할 수 있는 다양한 프로그램을 지속 운영하겠다”라고 전했다.

한편, 국립순천대 국제교류교육본부는 지역문제해결팀이 향후 홍보물 제작, 토론회 등 다양한 활동을 통해 지역민과의 소통 기회를 더욱 확대할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

Sunchon National University Hosts Cultural Exchange Event between International Students and Local Residents

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) held a cultural exchange event titled "Introducing Our Countries and Cultures" on May 30 and 31 at the university’s Global Caf?, bringing together international students and local residents. This event marked the first project of the university’s “International Student Local Problem-Solving Team,” established as part of the Glocal University 30 initiative.

The team consists of ten international students from diverse countries and academic backgrounds, selected to lead projects addressing multicultural issues in the local community throughout the year. From identifying issues to designing solutions, all stages of the project are student-led, promoting autonomy and local engagement.

Based on a survey conducted in April among international students, the team identified key challenges such as improving multicultural awareness and addressing job shortages for foreigners. In response, they organized the cultural presentation event as their first initiative.

Ten international students from countries including Nigeria, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, T?rkiye, Cameroon, and Kazakhstan gave presentations, while students and residents from Ghana, the United States, Sri Lanka, China, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Korea joined as participants. Presenters introduced their traditional food, clothing, history, and customs, fostering mutual understanding and respect across cultures.

The event also featured discussions on multicultural policies and perceptions of Korea in each country, distinguishing it from typical international student activities by focusing on practical, community-based problem-solving.

Mila, a first-year Computer Engineering student from Bangladesh, remarked, “It was meaningful to introduce my country’s culture, and I’m excited for future activities where we can build friendships through mutual respect and understanding.”

Director Seo Kang-seok of the Office of International Affairs stated, “We expect that empowering international students to identify and solve local issues will enhance their sense of belonging and strengthen ties with the local community. This project will lay an important foundation for a multicultural, inclusive society.”

The university plans to expand the team's activities through promotional content, discussion forums, and additional projects to foster continued dialogue with the local community.
