- 설립자의 정신을 이어, 후손이 전한 울림… 역사홍보관 순례와 참배로 깊어진 감동

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 개교 90주년을 맞이한 뜻깊은 해에, 대학 설립자인 우석 김종익 선생의 손녀이자, 고려대학교 의과대학 교수로 재직 중인 김희주 박사가 대학발전기금 2천만 원을 기탁했다고 밝혔다.

이번 기탁은 김희주 교수가 대학 측에 먼저 연락해 기부 의사를 밝힌 것으로, 조부(祖父)의 숭고한 교육 철학을 기리고자 하는 후손의 깊은 애정과 신념이 담긴 특별한 나눔으로 평가받고 있다.

14일 총장실에서 열린 기탁식은 조용하고 따뜻한 분위기 속에 진행되었으며, 이후 김희주 교수를 포함한 우석 선생 가족 일행은 이병운 총장 및 보직자들과 함께 대학 역사홍보관과 우석 김종익 선생의 흉상, 기념비, 해룡 선영 등을 차례로 방문하며 설립자의 발자취를 돌아보는 순례의 시간을 가졌다.

김희주 교수는 “조부의 뜻과 흔적이 깃든 대학의 발전에 작게나마 보탬이 되고 싶었다”라며, “앞으로도 국립순천대학교가 설립자의 정신을 계승해, 더욱 크고 단단한 미래로 나아가기를 기대한다”라고 소회를 밝혔다.

이에 이병운 총장은 “김희주 교수님의 따뜻한 나눔은 대학 구성원 모두에게 깊은 감동을 주었으며, 90년의 뿌리를 다시 돌아보게 하는 특별한 순간이었다”라며, “우석 선생님의 정신을 가슴 깊이 새기고, 미래 100년을 향한 실천의 여정을 흔들림 없이 이어가겠다”라고 화답했다.

한편, 우석 김종익 선생은 일제강점기 농업을 통해 나라를 일으키겠다는 ‘구국농업’의 정신으로 1935년 순천공립농업학교(현 국립순천대학교)를 설립한 교육자다.김종익 선생은 1937년 51세의 일기로 타계하면서 재산 175만원(현재 가치 약 5천억 원 상당)을 육영사업을 포함한 사회 공익사업에 희사했다.

유족들은 선생의 유지를 받들어 순천고등보통학교(현 순천고)과 순천여자고등보통학교(현 순천여고)를 설립했으며, 서울에 경성여자의학전문학교(현 고려대 의대와 합병)와 부속병원까지 세웠다.

국립순천대학교는 설립자의 뜻을 기리기 위해 매년 해룡면 선영을 정비하고, 개교기념일마다 참배를 이어가고 있다. 대학 측은 개교 90주년을 맞아, 우석 선생의 교육 철학을 널리 알리기 위한 역사 교육 콘텐츠 개발 등을 적극 검토 중이다.

Professor Hee-Joo Kim, Granddaughter of SCNU Founder Wooseok Kim, Donates 20 Million KRW to Alma Mater

- A heartfelt tribute from a descendant: retracing the founder’s footsteps deepens the legacy

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) announced that Professor Hee-Joo Kim of Korea University College of Medicine, the granddaughter of Wooseok Kim, the founder of the university, has donated 20 million KRW to the university’s development fund in celebration of its 90th anniversary.

This special donation was initiated by Professor Kim herself, who reached out to the university to express her intention. It is regarded as a deeply meaningful gesture?an act of affection and conviction from a descendant seeking to honor her grandfather’s noble educational philosophy.

The donation ceremony, held on June 14 at the university president’s office, took place in a quiet and warm atmosphere. After the ceremony, Professor Kim and her family, along with President Lee and key university officials, visited the university’s History and Public Relations Hall, the bust and monument of Wooseok Kim, and his family gravesite in Haeryong-myeon. The visit served as a solemn pilgrimage retracing the footsteps of the founder.

“I wanted to contribute in my own small way to a university that holds my grandfather’s vision and legacy,” said Professor Kim. “I hope that Sunchon National University will continue to grow strong, carrying forward the spirit of its founder into the future.”

President Lee responded, “Professor Kim’s generous and heartfelt gift touched all members of our university community. It was a profound moment that invited us to reflect on our 90-year history. We will carry Wooseok Kim’s spirit close to heart as we boldly move forward on our journey toward the next 100 years.”

Wooseok Kim was an educator who founded the Sunchon Public Agricultural School (the predecessor of SCNU) in 1935 with a mission to rebuild the nation through agriculture during the Japanese colonial period. Upon his passing in 1937 at the age of 51, he donated his entire fortune?1.75 million KRW at the time (equivalent to approximately 500 billion KRW today)?to public causes including educational advancement.

Honoring his will, the Kim family went on to establish Sunchon High School and Sunchon Girls' High School. In Seoul, they founded Kyungsung Women’s Medical College and its affiliated hospital, which later merged with Korea University College of Medicine.

To preserve and carry on Wooseok Kim’s legacy, Sunchon National University maintains and tends to his family gravesite in Haeryong-myeon annually, and holds commemorative visits on its founding anniversary. In this 90th anniversary year, the university is also considering the development of historical education content to promote the founder’s educational philosophy more broadly.
