- 최종 교명 후보로 ‘전라국립대학교’·‘전남국립연합대학교’ 확정

- 12월 17일(수) 양 대학 구성원 대상 온라인 선호도 조사 실시

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)와 국립목포대학교(총장 송하철)는 지난 9일 개최된 제8차 ‘대학통합 공동추진위원회(이하 ‘공추위’)’ 회의를 통해, 통합 대학의 교명 최종 후보로 ‘전라국립대학교’와 ‘전남국립연합대학교’를 확정했다고 밝혔다.

이번에 선정된 교명 후보는 지난 9월 24일부터 10월 10일까지 진행된 학내 구성원과 전국민 대상 공모 결과 및 전문가 컨설팅 등에서 제안된 다양한 의견을 종합하여 마련되었다.

양 대학의 총장과 주요 보직자, 교수·직원·조교·학생 대표로 구성된 공추위는 이를 바탕으로 세 차례에 걸친 심도 있는 논의와 엄격한 심사 과정을 거쳐, 통합 대학의 비전을 가장 잘 담아낸 두 개의 안을 최종 후보로 낙점했다.

먼저 ‘전라국립대학교’는 전라 지역을 대표하는 국립대학이라는 정체성과 지역의 역사·문화적 기반을 결합해, 전라권을 중심으로 국가의 교육·연구 기능을 선도하는 거점 국립대학으로의 도약 의지를 담고 있다.

‘전남국립연합대학교’는 전남을 대표하는 국립대학이라는 상징성과 함께, 두 대학의 수평적 협력을 강조한다. 각자의 강점을 유지하면서 공동 운영체계를 구축하겠다는 대학 통합의 방향성을 반영한 명칭이다.

양 대학은 오는 12월 17일(수) 오전 9시부터 오후 6시까지, 통합대학 교명 후보에 대한 구성원 선호도 조사를 실시한다. 조사 대상은 교수, 직원, 조교, 학생 등 전체 구성원이며, 접근 편의성과 효율성을 고려해 온라인 익명 투표 방식으로 진행된다. 또한, 조사결과의 신뢰도 확보를 위해 응답 횟수는 1인 1회로 제한해 중복 참여를 방지할 계획이다.

선호도 조사 결과는 ‘공추위’에 보고되어 최종 검토·심의를 거치게 되며, 이후 교육부의 관련 행정 절차와 타 대학 대상 의견수렴 과정 등을 고려해, 교명 후보를 1순위와 2순위로 구분하여 통합수정신청서에 반영, 교육부에 제출할 예정이다.

이병운 총장과 송하철 총장은 “통합대학의 새로운 교명에 대해 많은 관심과 애정을 갖고 소중한 의견을 보내주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드린다”라며, “최종 교명 선정이 원활하게 마무리될 수 있도록 끝까지 최선을 다하겠다”고 밝혔다.

“The New Name of Jeonnam’s Integrated National University to Be Decided Based on the Collective Will of Its Members”

- Final candidates confirmed as “Jeolla National University” and “Jeonnam National Union University”

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byeong-un) and Mokpo National University (President Song Ha-cheol) announced that, through the 8th meeting of the Joint Steering Committee for University Integration, held on December 9, they have finalized “Jeolla National University” and “Jeonnam National Union University” as the final candidates for the name of the integrated national university.

The two candidate names were derived by comprehensively reviewing opinions submitted through a public naming contest conducted from September 24 to October 10, which targeted university members and the general public nationwide, along with feedback from expert consultations.

The Joint Steering Committee-composed of the presidents of both universities, key administrative leaders, and representatives of faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students?conducted three rounds of in-depth discussions and a rigorous evaluation process. Based on these deliberations, the committee selected the two names that best reflect the vision of the integrated university as final candidates.

The name “Jeolla National University” emphasizes the identity of a national university representing the Jeolla region, combining the region’s historical and cultural foundations with the ambition to serve as a leading hub national university for education and research across the broader Jeolla area.

The name “Jeonnam National Union University” highlights Jeonnam as a representative national university while underscoring horizontal cooperation between the two institutions. It reflects the direction of the integration by emphasizing joint governance while preserving the strengths of each university.

Both universities will conduct an online preference survey on the two candidate names on Wednesday, December 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The survey will target all university members, including faculty, staff, teaching assistants, and students, and will be conducted through an anonymous online voting system to ensure accessibility and efficiency. To ensure the reliability of the results, voting will be limited to one response per person, with measures in place to prevent duplicate participation.

The survey results will be reported to the Joint Steering Committee for final review and deliberation. Taking into account subsequent administrative procedures with the Ministry of Education and opinion-gathering processes involving other universities, the results will be reflected in the application for modification of the integration plan, with the candidate names ranked as first and second priority and submitted to the Ministry of Education.

Presidents Lee Byeong-un and Song Ha-cheol stated, “We sincerely thank everyone who has shown great interest and shared valuable opinions regarding the new name of the integrated university,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure that the final name selection process is brought to a smooth and successful conclusion.”
