국립순천대학교(총장 이병운) 환경공학전공은 전공 개설 30주년을 맞아 지난 12월 5일, 지속가능한 미래를 향한 비전과 성과를 공유하는 기념행사를 개최했다. 이번 행사는 학내 구성원과 동문, 환경 분야 전문가들이 한자리에 모여 지난 30년간 쌓아온 교육·연구 역량을 돌아보고 미래 발전 방향을 모색하는 자리로 마련되었다.

기념식은 김도군 전공주임교수의 환영사를 시작으로 유찬서 동문회장과 이예원 학생회장의 감사 인사에 이어 진행되었으며, 환경 분야 각 기관에서 참석한 주요 인사들의 축하와 격려가 이어졌다.

특히 김영우 영산강유역환경청장, 강석태 대한환경공학회 회장, 박성길 POSCO 환경자원그룹장 등이 ▲기후 위기 시대에 환경?에너지 정책의 도전과 과제 ▲물의 가치를 높이는 방법 ▲제조업에서의 환경관리 분야 인재상 등을 주제로 특별강연을 통해 기후위기 시대 환경·에너지 정책의 방향, 물의 가치 제고 방안, 제조업 현장에서 요구되는 환경인재상 등을 제시해 참석자들로부터 큰 호응을 얻었다.

환경공학전공은 이번 30주년 행사를 통해 지역·산업·학계와의 협력 기반을 다시 확인하며, 향후 친환경 공정기술, 탄소중립, 물환경 관리 등 현대 사회가 요구하는 전문 인재 양성 체계를 더욱 고도화할 계획이다.

김도군 전공주임교수는 “현장에서 활약하는 전문가와 미래 인재들이 함께 모여 지속가능한 방향으로 나아갈 힘을 확인한 자리였다”며 “환경공학 전공의 30년 역사를 딛고 지역과 국가를 선도하는 교육·연구 기반을 더욱 확장하겠다”고 밝혔다. 또한, “이번 행사는 준비와 진행 과정에서 재학생, 졸업생 교직원이 한마음으로 적극적으로 협력하였다는 점에서 특별한 의미가 있다”고 강조하였다.

SCNU Department of Environmental Engineering Celebrates 30th Anniversary

- Leaders from government, academia, industry, alumni, and the community gather to share achievements and discuss a sustainable future

The Department of Environmental Engineering at Sunchon National University (SCNU) held a ceremony on December 5 to mark the 30th anniversary of its establishment, bringing together faculty members, alumni, students, and environmental experts to reflect on its achievements and discuss future directions toward sustainability.

The event provided an opportunity to review the department’s educational and research accomplishments over the past three decades and to strengthen cooperation among the university, industry, and the local community. Participants shared insights on how environmental engineering education can continue to respond to evolving social and environmental challenges.

The ceremony began with a welcome address from the department chair, followed by congratulatory remarks from alumni and student representatives. Distinguished guests from various environmental organizations delivered messages of encouragement, highlighting the importance of collaboration in addressing climate change and environmental issues.

Special lectures were also held, covering topics such as challenges in environmental and energy policy in the era of climate crisis, ways to enhance the value of water resources, and the qualities required of environmental professionals in the manufacturing sector. These sessions received strong interest from attendees and encouraged active discussion.

Through the anniversary event, the department reaffirmed its strong foundation of cooperation with regional institutions, industry, and academia. SCNU plans to further advance its education and training systems in areas such as eco-friendly process technologies, carbon neutrality, and water environment management to cultivate highly skilled environmental professionals.

The department chair noted that the event demonstrated the collective strength of experts and future leaders working together toward sustainability, and emphasized that the department will continue to expand its educational and research capacity to contribute to regional and national development.

The event was attended by key figures from environmental agencies, local government, industry, academia, and civic organizations, underscoring the department’s long-standing role as a hub connecting environmental education, research, and practice.
