- 전년 대비 152계단 상승한 아시아 648위(상위 42.38%)기록… 국가중심국·공립대 중 최대 상승폭

- 글로컬대학30·RISE 등 대형 재정지원사업 성과가 대학 경쟁력 강화로 이어져

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 세계적 대학평가기관 QS(Quacquarelli Symonds)가 발표한 「2026 QS 아시아 대학평가」에서 아시아 648위(동아시아 305위, 상위 42.38%)를 기록하며 전년 대비 100계단 이상 상승했다고 밝혔다.

이는 지난해 751?800위권에서 최대 152계단 도약한 결과로, 평가 참여 대학이 550개 증가하고 국내 대학 약 65%의 순위가 하락한 가운데 거둔 성과라는 점에서 의미가 크다.

특히, 국가중심국·공립대학교 중 가장 큰 순위 상승 폭을 기록하며, 정부 재정지원사업 성과가 대학의 글로벌 경쟁력 강화로 연결된 모범 사례로 주목받고 있다. 대학은 교육·연구 기반 강화, 국제 교류 확대, 지역 기반 혁신전략 추진이 종합적으로 반영된 성과라고 설명했다.

국립순천대는 이병운 총장 취임 이후 대규모 재정 확충에 나섰다. 지난 2023년 글로컬대학30 사업 선정(5년간 1,000억 원)을 시작으로 △국립대학육성사업 3년 연속 최고 등급(S등급) 획득 △전남 RISE사업 신청 주관 과제(10개) 모두 선정(5년간 708억 원) 등 대형 국책사업을 잇달아 유치해 냈다. 이를 통해 확보한 누적 재정은 총 2,294억 8천만 원에 달한다.

국립순천대는 확보된 재정을 기반으로 과감한 교육 혁신을 단행했다. 학문 간 장벽을 허물고자 3대 특화 분야를 중심으로 ‘스쿨제’로 개편하고, 전공자율선택제와 다전공 필수 이수제 등을 도입했다. 또한, 순천·고흥·광양 등 전남 동부권에 5개 ‘지·산·학 캠퍼스’를 개소하며, 지역 산업과의 연결고리를 강화했다.

이에 더해 지난해 중국 절강미대어대학교와 공유캠퍼스를 구축하고, 올해는 필리핀 무뇨스에 세종학당을 신설하는 등 33개국 220여 개 교류 대학과 공동교육·연구 학생 교류 기반을 강화하며, 교육 혁신 성과를 세계로 전파하고 있다.

이와 같은 노력이 교육 여건과 연구 역량, 대학 평판도 등 QS 평가 핵심 지표 전반에 고스란히 녹아들며 순위 향상을 이끌었다는 분석이다.

한편, 이병운 총장은 11월 4일 고려대학교에서 열린 ‘QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2025’에 참석하여 대학의 혁신 사례를 소개하고 글로벌 네트워크 확대에 나섰다.

현장에서 인도네시아 무함마디야 욕야카르타대학교·말레이시아 세기대학교와 MOU를 체결했으며, UC 리버사이드·파리공과대학 등 해외 주요 대학과 국제협력 확대 방안을 논의했다. 또한 필리핀 센트럴루손주립대학, 우즈베키스탄 기묘국제대, 몽골 글로벌리더십대학 등과는 그린스마트팜·한국학 분야 공동연구소 설립을 추진하기로 약속했다.

이병운 총장은 “이번 QS 순위 상승은 모든 구성원이 ‘혁신과 융합! 지·산·학 협력 거점’이라는 비전과 ‘글로컬 교육 혁신’이라는 목표를 향해 함께 땀 흘려 노력한 결과”라며 “앞으로도 전남을 넘어 대한민국을 대표하는 글로벌 특성화 대학으로 도약할 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

SCNU Achieves Remarkable Rise of Over 100 Places in the 2026 QS Asia University Rankings

- Climbs to 648th in Asia, up to 152 places from last year ? the highest upward movement among national public universities in Korea

- Results reflect the impact of major government-funded Glocal University 30 and RISE initiatives that advanced educational innovation and institutional competitiveness

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) announced that it ranked 648th in Asia (305th in East Asia) in the 2026 QS Asia University Rankings released by global higher education evaluation agency QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). The ranking places SCNU in the top 42.38% and marks an increase of more than 100 places compared to last year.

This year’s result represents a leap of up to 152 places from the previous 751-800 range. The achievement is especially significant given that approximately 550 more institutions participated in the evaluation compared to the previous year, and nearly 65% of Korean universities recorded lower rankings.

SCNU recorded the largest upward movement among national public universities in Korea, gaining attention as a representative case in which outcomes from major government-funded higher education innovation projects have translated into strengthened global competitiveness. The university noted that the improvement reflects a combination of enhanced research capacity, expanded international academic exchange, and regionally connected innovation strategies.

Since the inauguration of President Lee, SCNU has actively secured large-scale external funding. Following its selection for the Glocal University 30 initiative in 2023 (KRW 100 billion over five years), SCNU achieved the highest rating (S grade) for three consecutive years in the National University Development Project and had all 10 of its proposals selected under the Jeonnam RISE (Regional Innovation System for Education) initiative (KRW 70.8 billion over five years). To date, the university has secured a total of KRW 229.48 billion in external project funding.

Based on this foundation, SCNU reorganized its academic structure around three strategic priority fields under a flexible “School System,” introduced a major exploration and multi-major completion model, and established five 'Local-Industry-University (지·산·학) Campuses across Suncheon, Goheung, and Gwangyang, strengthening organic cooperation with regional industry.

SCNU also expanded its global academic network. In 2023, it established a shared campus with Zhejiang Yuexiu University in China, and in 2024 launched a Sejong Institute in Munoz, Philippines. The university now works with more than 220 partner institutions across 33 countries to promote joint education, research, and student exchange.

These efforts contributed to advancements across key QS indicators?including academic reputation, international engagement, research productivity, and overall institutional performance?leading to the university’s ranking improvement.

On November 4, President Lee participated in the “QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2025” held at Korea University, where SCNU shared its innovation model and expanded global cooperation networks. On-site, SCNU signed MOUs with Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (Indonesia) and SEGi University (Malaysia), and discussed future collaboration with UC Riverside and ?cole Polytechnique (France). SCNU also agreed to pursue joint research centers in Green Smart Agriculture and Korean Studies with Central Luzon State University (Philippines), QMU International University (Uzbekistan), and Global Leadership University (Mongolia).

President Lee stated, “This achievement is the result of our entire university community working together toward the vision of becoming a ‘glocal innovation hub connecting learning, industry, and community.’ We will continue to strengthen our role as a globally competitive university that represents Jeonnam and Korea on the world stage.”
