- 11개국 17명 유학생 참가… 무위사·백운동 정원·영랑생가·가우도 등 역사·문화·레저 체험

- 글로컬대학30·RISE사업과 연계해 유학생 정주 지원 및 지역사회 교류 확대

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 9월 20일 전남 강진군 일대에서 외국인 유학생 17명을 대상으로 ‘2025학년도 외국인 유학생 지역살아보기(3차)’ 프로그램을 운영했다고 밝혔다. 이번 프로그램에는 미얀마, 베트남, 아르메니아 등 11개국 출신 유학생들이 참여해 강진의 역사·문화·레저를 직접 체험하며 지역에 대한 이해를 넓혔다.

첫 일정으로 참가자들은 천년 고찰 무위사를 찾아 국보 제13호 극락보전과 사찰 곳곳을 관람하며 한국 불교문화의 깊이를 느꼈다. 특히 원효대사의 해골물 일화를 그린 벽화를 보며 ‘모든 것은 마음먹기에 달려 있다’는 메시지를 되새겼다. 이어 조선시대 전라남도 3대 정원 중 하나로 꼽히는 백운동 정원을 방문해 자연을 있는 그대로 담아낸 한국 전통 정원의 멋을 체험하고, 주변의 차밭과 월출산의 경관을 배경으로 기념사진을 남겼다.

또한, 가을의 정취가 물씬 풍기는 영랑생가 마루에 앉아 삼행시 짓기와 시 낭송 등 문학 활동도 체험했다. 직접 창작한 작품을 낭송하고 ‘장원’을 선발하며, 그간 갈고닦은 한국어 실력을 뽐냈다. 마지막 일정으로는 강진 가우도 해상 짚라인을 체험하며 바다 위를 가로지르는 짜릿한 순간을 만끽했다. 학생들은 “학업과 유학 생활에서 쌓인 스트레스를 시원하게 날려버린 기회였다”라며 큰 만족감을 드러냈다.

이날 삼행시 장원에 선정된 우즈베키스탄 출신 교환학생 카몰라(Kamola)는 “무위사에서 본 원효대사 벽화가 가장 인상 깊었다.”라며, “천국이든 지옥이든 결국 내가 어떻게 생각하느냐에 달려 있다는 점에서 한국에서 공부하는 지금, 이 순간을 더 소중히 살아야겠다고 느낀다”라는 소감을 전했다.

서강석 국제교류교육본부장은 “유학생들이 강진의 역사와 문화를 체험하며, 지역사회와의 유대를 넓히는 시간이었길 바란다”라며, “앞으로도 다양한 현장 중심 프로그램을 운영해 우수 인재들이 지역에 안정적으로 정착할 수 있도록 적극 지원하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

한편, 국립순천대학교는 교육부 글로컬대학30 및 라이즈(RISE) 사업과 연계해 외국인 유학생 정주 지원과 지역사회 교류 확대를 위한 다양한 프로그램을 마련하였으며, 올해 총 5차례에 걸쳐 남도 지역을 순회하며 ‘지역살아보기’ 프로그램을 운영 중이다.

SCNU Offers “Live Like a Local” Program in Gangjin for International Students

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) announced that on September 20 it hosted the third session of the 2025 “Live Like a Local” program in Gangjin County, Jeollanam-do, with 17 international students participating. Students from 11 countries?including Myanmar, Vietnam, and Armenia?took part in the one-day trip, immersing themselves in the area’s history, culture, and leisure activities to gain a deeper understanding of the region.

The tour began with a visit to Muwisa Temple, a thousand-year-old Buddhist site, where students viewed the National Treasure No. 13 Geungnakbojeon Hall and admired murals throughout the temple. In particular, they reflected on the mural of the legend of Monk Wonhyo and the “skull water,” which conveys the message that “everything depends on the mind.”

Next, the group explored Baekundong Garden, one of Jeollanam-do’s three renowned Joseon-era gardens, appreciating the beauty of traditional Korean landscaping and taking photos against a backdrop of tea fields and Wolchulsan Mountain. At the birthplace of poet Yeongrang, students composed three-line poems and read their works aloud, experiencing Korea’s autumn literary culture and practicing expressive Korean language skills.

The final stop was Gau-do Island, where students enjoyed a thrilling ride on a marine zipline over the sea. Many remarked that the experience helped them relieve academic and personal stress, making it a refreshing and memorable conclusion to the trip.

Kamola, an exchange student from Uzbekistan who was recognized as the day’s top three-line poet, said, “The mural of Monk Wonhyo at Muwisa Temple left the deepest impression on me. It reminded me that whether it’s heaven or hell ultimately depends on how I choose to think, and that I should cherish every moment of my life.”

Seo Kang-seok, Director of SCNU’s Office of International Affairs and Education, commented, “This program was significant in helping international students experience the history and culture of Gangjin and strengthen their ties with the local community. We will continue to provide field-based programs to support international students in building stable lives in the region.”

As part of the Ministry of Education’s Glocal University 30 and RISE projects, SCNU runs a variety of programs to help international students settle in Korea and engage with local communities. The university plans to hold a total of five sessions of the ‘Live Like a Local’ program this year, promoting deeper cultural understanding and long-term community connections.
