- 광주,전남 9개 지역 고등학생 680여 명 참여 … 의생명과학 분야 진로 탐색 기회 제공

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운) 의생명과학전공은 국립대학육성사업의 일환으로 광주·전남권 고등학생을 대상으로 ‘「2025 찾아가는 의생명과학 특강」을 운영했다고 밝혔다.

이번 특강은 의생명과학 분야의 주요 이슈와 최신 연구 동향을 소개하고, 미래 중요 산업 분야인 바이오메디컬 산업과 연계된 학문적 가능성을 알리기 위해 마련되었다. 지난 5월부터 8월까지 광주, 순천, 광양, 여수, 목포, 고흥, 영광, 구례, 해남 등 9개 지역 20개 고등학교에서 총 680여 명의 학생이 참여했다.

의생명과학전공 교수진은 직접 학교를 방문해 ▲황금보다 비싼 단백질 이야기(김대헌 교수) ▲눈으로 보는 의생명과학(김종진 교수) ▲인간의 진화와 바이러스(황혜숙 교수) ▲생명과학과 함께 상상해보기(박항수 교수) ▲장 속 미생물의 놀라운 이야기(김지선 교수) 등 분야별 주제 특강을 진행했다. 또한 의생명과학전공 교육과정과 졸업 후 진로도 함께 소개했다.

참여한 고교생들은 “평소 의생명과학에 관심은 많았지만, 학과에서 무엇을 배우는지 어디로 취업하는지 제대로 알지 못했었는데, 특강을 통해 자세히 알게 되었다.”, “의생명과학 분야에 더 흥미가 생겼고, 기회가 된다면 다른 강의들도 듣고 싶다” “어려운 내용을 자세히 설명해 주셔서 이해가 쉽고, 무척 의미 있는 시간이었다.” 등 긍정적인 반응을 보이며 높은 만족을 보였다.

의생명과학전공 주임 황혜숙 교수는 “고교생 눈높이에 맞춘 특강을 통해 학생들이 의생명과학 분야의 최신 연구와 진로를 폭넓게 이해할 수 있었기를 바란다”며, “앞으로도 글로컬대학30과 국립대학육성사업과 연계해 중·고교와 대학 간 협력 프로그램을 적극 확대하겠다”고 말했다.

한편, 국립순천대학교 의생명과학전공은 2025학년도부터 3대 특화분야 중 하나인 그린스마트팜스쿨에 편제되어 신입생을 모집하고 있다.

SCNU Department of Biomedical Science Hosts Special Outreach Lectures for High School Students

- Over 680 students from nine regions in Gwangju and Jeonnam participated, exploring career paths in biomedical science

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) announced that the Department of Biomedical Science has successfully carried out the “2025 Biomedical Science Outreach Lectures” for high school students in the Gwangju&Jeonnam region, supported by the National University Development Project.

The program, held from May to August, introduced key issues and recent research trends in biomedical science, highlighting future opportunities in the biomedical industry. A total of 680 students from 20 high schools across nine regions -including Gwangju, Suncheon, Gwangyang, Yeosu, Mokpo, Goheung, Yeonggwang, Gurye, and Haenam- took part.

Faculty members visited schools directly to deliver thematic lectures such as “Proteins More Valuable than Gold” (Prof. Daeheon Kim), “Biomedical Science through the Lens” (Prof. Jongjin Kim), “Human Evolution and Viruses” (Prof. Hyesook Hwang), “Imagining with Life Science” (Prof. Hangsoo Park), and “The Amazing World of Gut Microbes” (Prof. Jisun Kim). The sessions also introduced SCNU’s curriculum and career pathways after graduation.

Participants responded enthusiastically, noting that the lectures helped them better understand what the field entails, where graduates can work, and how biomedical science connects to real-world issues. Many students expressed a stronger interest in pursuing further studies and appreciated the engaging, accessible delivery.

Professor Hyesook Hwang, Chair of the Department, stated, “We hope these lectures provided students with a clear and engaging introduction to the latest developments in biomedical science and its career possibilities. SCNU will continue to expand high school?university cooperation programs through the Glocal University 30 and National University Development projects.”

The Department of Biomedical Science at SCNU has been newly incorporated into the Green Smart Farm School, one of SCNU’s three specialized clusters, and will begin recruiting students from the 2025 academic year.
