- 9개국 외국인 유학생 10명, 여수 금오도·안도에서 1박 2일간 트레킹·유적지 방문과 캠핑·전통 놀이 체험

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 외국인 유학생 10명이 지난 8월 22일(금)부터 23일(토)까지 전라남도 여수 금오도와 안도 일대에서 ‘2025학년도 외국인 유학생 지역살아보기(2차)’프로그램에 참여했다고 밝혔다. 방글라데시, 미얀마, 우즈베키스탄, 인도네시아 등 9개국 출신 유학생들은 여수 섬 지역의 자연과 역사, 생활문화를 직접 체험하며 지역사회에 대한 이해를 넓혔다.

첫째 날 일정은 여수 앞바다의 365개 섬 가운데 가장 큰 섬인 금오도의 ‘비렁길 트레킹’으로 시작되었다. 금오도의 비렁길은 해안 절벽을 따라 조성된 한국의 대표적인 해안 도보여행 코스로, 학생들은 바다와 맞닿은 길을 걸으며 탁 트인 남해의 풍광을 즐겼다. 이후 한국전쟁 당시 발생한 폭격 사건 희생자를 기리는 '안도 이야포 평화공원'을 방문해 전쟁과 평화의 의미를 되새겼다.

저녁에는 안도마을협동조합이 운영하는 기러기 캠핑장에서 문화 체험이 이어졌다. 제기차기, 딱지치기, 투호 던지기와 같은 한국 전통 놀이 결과에 맞춰, 바비큐 조리팀, 한식 요리팀, 상차림 및 정리팀으로 나누어 캠핑 체험에 나섰다. 참가자들은 직접 준비한 음식을 나누는 ‘포틀럭 파티(potluck party)’를 통해 서로의 음식 문화와 한국의 캠핑문화를 몸소 경험했다. 둘째 날에는 몽돌해수욕장 자갈 해변을 거닐며 여수 바다의 매력을 만끽하고, 기념사진을 남기며 남도에서의 추억을 더했다.

필리핀 출신 토목공학과 유학생 크리스틴(Kristine)은 “외국인 유학생은 섬 여행하기가 아주 힘든데, 프로그램을 통해 아름답기로 유명한 금오도 비렁길을 직접 걸어볼 수 있어 유학 생활 중 가장 기억에 남는 활동이 될 것 같다”라고 밝혔으며, 인도네시아 출신 조리학과 유학생 나빌라(Nabila)는 “캠프파이어가 가장 인상적이었다. 자연 속에서 불을 바라보며 서로 유학 생활의 기쁨과 어려움 등을 나누는 아주 따뜻한 시간이었다”고 소감을 전했다.

국립순천대 서강석 국제교류교육본부장은 “이번 지역 살아보기 프로그램은 섬 지역의 자연과 문화를 직접 체험하며, 지역의 아름다움을 탐색할 수 있도록 기획되었다”라며, “앞으로도 유학생들이 지역에 대한 애정을 갖고, 안정적으로 정착하는 글로벌 지역인재로 성장할 수 있도록 여러 지원을 강화해 나갈 것”이라고 밝혔다.

한편, 국립순천대학교는 교육부 글로컬대학30 사업 및 라이즈(RISE) 사업과 연계해 외국인 유학생 정주 지원과 지역사회 교류 확대를 위한 다양한 프로그램을 운영하고 있으며, 이번 2차 프로그램을 포함해 올해 총 5차례의 ‘지역살아보기’ 프로그램을 계획하고 있다.

SCNU International Students Experience “Living in the Region” ? Two Days on Yeosu Islands

- Ten students from nine countries explore Geumodo and Ando through trekking, cultural visits, camping, and traditional games

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) announced that ten international students from nine countries, including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and Indonesia, participated in the second round of the “Living in the Region” program on August 22?23. The students experienced the natural beauty, history, and culture of Yeosu’s Geumodo and Ando islands, deepening their understanding of the local community.

The program began with trekking along Geumodo’s famous Bireong Trail, a coastal cliffside path renowned as one of Korea’s most scenic walking courses. Students then visited the Ando Iyapo Peace Park, which commemorates victims of wartime bombings, reflecting on themes of conflict and peace.

In the evening, the group stayed at a local community-run campsite on Ando, where they engaged in traditional Korean games such as jegichagi, ddakji, and tuho. They also prepared food together in teams and shared a potluck barbecue, combining cultural exchange with hands-on camping experiences. On the second day, the students enjoyed a walk along the pebble beach at Mongdol Beach, taking photos and appreciating the coastal scenery.

Kristine, a civil engineering student from the Philippines, commented, “Traveling to islands can be very difficult for international students, but this program allowed me to hike the beautiful Bireong Trail ? it will be one of my most unforgettable experiences.” Nabila, a culinary arts student from Indonesia, added, “The campfire was the highlight for me. Sitting together by the fire in nature and sharing stories about our student life created a very warm and meaningful time.”

Seo Kang-seok, Director of SCNU’s Office of International Relations, said, “This program was designed to let students directly experience the unique culture and environment of island communities. We will continue to support international students in building a stronger connection to the region so they can grow into global talents who also feel at home here.”

The “Living in the Region” program is linked to the Ministry of Education’s Glocal University 30 and RISE initiatives. SCNU plans to hold a total of five such programs in 2025, further expanding opportunities for international students to engage with local communities and strengthen their sense of belonging.
