- 전남권 의대 설립 위한 공동 노력 결실 맺어…후속 절차도 적극 전개할 것

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)와 국립목포대학교(총장 송하철)는 8월 13일 대통령 직속 국정기획위원회가 주관한 대국민 보고대회에서 ‘지역격차 해소, 필수의료 확충, 공공의료 강화*’가 123대 국정과제에 최종 반영된 데 대해 깊은 환영의 뜻을 밝혔다.

해당 국정과제는 의료 인프라가 열악한 지역에 대한 실질적 해법을 제시하고, 지역 간 의료격차 해소와 공공보건 인력 양성을 목표로 하는 정책으로, 전라남도 통합 의과대학 설립을 위한 실질적 동력이 될 것으로 기대된다. 

그간 국립순천대와 국립목포대는 의대 설립을 전제로 한 대학 통합에 합의하고, 통합의대 설립 공동준비위원회(이하 공동준비위원회)를 운영하며 전라남도와 함께 국립의대 설립의 당위성과 필요성을 지속적으로 건의해 왔다. 특히, 공동준비위원회는 국정기획위원회를 비롯한 관련 부처와 국회 보건복지위원회 및 교육위원회, 한국보건사회연구원 등을 직접 방문하며 전방위적인 설득과 공론화 노력을 기울였다.

국립순천대 이병운 총장은 “전남 국립의대 설립은 도민의 건강권 보장과 지역·필수·공공의료 확충을 위한 국가적 책무”라며 “대학은 향후 의대 신설 과정에서 교육과 연구, 인프라 구축에 최선을 다해 국가와 지역사회가 필요로 하는 의료 인재를 양성하겠다”라고 밝혔다.

SCNU and MNU Welcome Inclusion of “Reducing Regional Gaps, Expanding Essential and Public Healthcare” in National Policy Agenda

- Joint efforts for the establishment of a medical school in Jeonnam bear fruit; follow-up steps to be pursued actively

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) and Mokpo National University (President Song Ha-cheol) welcomed the announcement on August 13 that the Presidential Committee on State Affairs has included “Reducing Regional Disparities, Expanding Essential Healthcare, and Strengthening Public Health” in its 123 National Policy Agenda items.

This policy aims to address inadequate medical infrastructure in underserved areas, reduce healthcare disparities between regions, and foster public health professionals. It is expected to provide substantial momentum for the establishment of an integrated medical school in Jeollanam-do.

The two universities have previously agreed on a merger based on the establishment of a medical school and have jointly operated the Preparatory Committee for the Integrated Medical School with Jeollanam-do. Together, they have consistently emphasized the necessity of a national medical school through active engagement with the Presidential Committee on State Affairs, relevant ministries, the National Assembly’s Health and Welfare and Education Committees, and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs.

SCNU President Lee Byung-woon stated, “The establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam is a national responsibility to guarantee residents’ right to health and to expand essential and public healthcare services. SCNU will spare no effort in building the education, research, and infrastructure needed to train medical professionals that both the nation and the region urgently require.”
