- ‘남도에서 하루 살아보기’ 현장 중심 체류형 교육 통해 한국 문화·지역사회에 대한 이해도 제고

- 고흥 지산학캠퍼스·소록도 등 지역 곳곳에서 첨단 농업 기술 견학·인권 교육 등 진로 연계형 지역 체험 프로그램 운영

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 지난 7월 18일(금)부터 19일(토)까지 이틀간 외국인 유학생 12명을 대상으로 전남 고흥에서 ‘2025학년도 외국인 유학생 지역살아보기(1차)’ 프로그램을 운영했다고 밝혔다.

이번 프로그램은 유학생들이 지역의 산업과 문화, 자연환경, 역사적 맥락을 직접 체험하고 지역사회와 교류함으로써 전남에서의 정주 가능성을 실질적으로 탐색할 수 있도록 기획되었다. 가나, 미얀마, 방글라데시, 카메룬 등 각기 다른 문화적 배경을 지닌 8개국 출신의 유학생들은 한국의 지역성과 공동체 정신을 이해하는 시간을 가졌다.

 첫째 날 일정은 고흥 팔영산 자락에 위치한 능가사 방문으로 시작했다. 참가자들은 사찰의 역사와 불교예술에 대한 설명을 듣고, 사찰음식과 연꽃차를 체험하며 한국 불교문화에 대한 이해를 높였다. 이어 고흥분청문화박물관에서는 분청사기 제작 시연과 실습을 통해 한국 도자문화의 특징을 경험하였다.

오후에는 고흥 스마트팜 혁신밸리에 위치한 국립순천대학교 고흥 그린스마트팜캠퍼스를 방문해 스마트 실증온실단지와 빅데이터 센터 운영 현황 등을 견학하고, 지역 농업에 접목된 첨단 기술의 현장을 둘러보았다. 해당 캠퍼스는 향후 외국인 유학생 전담학과와 첨단 농축산 연구단지 조성이 예정된 지역으로, 유학생들은 진로 연계 측면에서도 큰 관심을 보였다. 한 유학생은 “자국에서는 보기 힘든 첨단 농업기술을 현장에서 직접 접할 수 있어 인상 깊었다”고 소감을 전했다.

이어진 일정에서는 소록도의 마리안느와 마가렛 기념관을 찾아, 43년간 한센인을 위해 헌신한 오스트리아 출신 간호사들의 삶을 돌아보며 나눔과 희생의 가치를 되새겼다. 저녁에는 녹동항 일대에서 고흥의 밤바다를 산책하며 항구 도시 특유의 정취를 만끽했다. 둘째 날에는 소록도 한센병박물관과 기념비, 공원 등을 차례로 방문해 한국 사회의 복합적 역사 속에서 한센병 환자들이 겪은 사회적 소외와 인권 문제를 성찰하는 시간을 가졌다. 유학생들은 단순한 문화 체험을 넘어 한국 사회의 다면적인 모습을 직면하며 깊은 감정을 공유했다.

미얀마 출신 유학생 소우 유 와이(Saw Yu Wai)는 “고흥의 다양한 얼굴을 직접 체험할 수 있어 매우 특별한 경험이었다”라며, “책이나 수업에서는 느낄 수 없는 현장의 감동을 얻었다”고 전했다. 방글라데시 출신 유학생 밀라(Mila)는 “소록도를 둘러보며 한국 사회의 내면을 더욱 깊게 이해하게 되었다”라며 “인간성이라는 보편 가치를 성찰할 수 있었던 뜻깊은 시간이었다”라고 말했다.

서강석 국제교류교육본부장은 “이번 프로그램은 외국인 유학생이 지역사회를 보다 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있도록 구성된 현장 체험 중심으로 기획된 프로그램”이라며, “앞으로도 유학생들이 지역에 안정적으로 정착하고, 글로벌 지역인재로 성장할 수 있도록 다양한 프로그램을 지속 운영할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.

한편, 국립순천대학교 국제교류교육본부는 글로컬대학30과 라이즈(RISE)사업을 연계하여 외국인 유학생과 지역사회 이해와 정착을 지원하는 맞춤형 정주지원 프로그램을 단계적으로 확대해 나갈 예정이다.

SCNU Hosts “Live Like a Local” Program in Goheung for International Students
? Glocal University 30 program helps students explore rural Korea and build ties to the local community

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) hosted its first “Live Like a Local” program from July 18 (Fri) to 19 (Sat) in Goheung, Jeollanam-do, with 12 international students participating. This two-day program offered hands-on experiences in local history, culture, and industry, aiming to deepen students’ understanding of the region and encourage long-term settlement.

The program began with a visit to Neunggasa Temple at the foot of Mt. Palyeong, where participants learned about Korean Buddhism, sampled traditional temple cuisine, and enjoyed lotus tea. At the Goheung Buncheong Museum, they observed ceramics being made and tried hands-on pottery techniques, experiencing Korea’s rich ceramic heritage.

In the afternoon, the group toured SCNU’s Green Smart Farm Campus, located within the Goheung Smart Farm Innovation Valley. Students explored advanced greenhouses and data management systems that integrate cutting-edge technology with agriculture. The site is also planned to host a specialized program for international students, drawing strong interest from participants, who expressed excitement about seeing agricultural innovation up close.

Later, the students visited the Marianne & Margaret Memorial Hall, which honors two Austrian nurses who dedicated 43 years of service to Hansen’s disease patients on Sorokdo Island. After dinner, the group enjoyed an evening stroll along Nokdong Port, soaking in the coastal town’s serene atmosphere.

On the second day, students toured the Sorokdo Hansen’s Disease Museum and monuments, learning about the social stigma and isolation faced by patients, gaining insight into Korea’s human rights history.

Saw Yu Wai from Myanmar reflected, “Experiencing Goheung firsthand was incredibly special. It gave me emotional depth that books or lectures cannot offer.” Mila from Bangladesh added, “Learning about Sorokdo’s past helped me understand Korea’s complex history. It was not just sightseeing?it was a moment of reflection on shared human values.”

Seo Kang-seok, Director of SCNU’s Office of International Affairs, stated, “We designed this program to help international students build deeper connections with the region through immersive local experiences. SCNU will continue offering similar programs to support students in becoming global talent rooted in the community.”

As part of the Glocal University 30 and RISE initiatives, SCNU plans to expand tailored regional immersion programs for international students, fostering greater interaction between international talent and local communities.
