국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)가 오는 5월 14일(수) 오전 10시 30분, 학내 70주년기념관 우석홀에서 대학의 역사와 함께한 내외빈을 초청해 ‘개교 90주년 기념식’을 개최한다고 밝혔다.

국립순천대학교는 1935년, 우석 김종익 선생이 ‘농업으로 배고픔을 해결하자’라는 뜻을 품고 설립한 순천공립농업학교를 모태로 출발했다. 이후 1991년 국립종합대학으로 승격한 뒤, 지역 청년들의 배움에 대한 열망과 함께 성장하며 오늘날 전라남도를 대표하는 국립대학교로 자리매김했다.

올해로 개교 90주년을 맞은 국립순천대는, 지역과 함께 걸어온 역사를 되짚고 미래 100년을 향한 새로운 도약을 준비하고 있다. 이번 개교기념식은 국립순천대가 지역사회와 함께 걸어온 90년의 여정을 기념하고, 다가올 미래를 공동체와 함께 준비하는 자리로 마련되었다. 기념식은 ▲기념사 및 축사 ▲90주년 기념 미디어 퍼포먼스 ▲‘자랑스러운 순천대인’ 시상 ▲축하 공연 ▲우석 김종익 선생 동상 참배 등 대학의 정체성과 정신을 기리는 다채로운 행사로 꾸려질 예정이다.

국립순천대는 그간 단순한 고등교육기관을 넘어, 지역의 교육 플랫폼이자 소통과 공유의 공간으로서 묵묵히 역할을 다해왔다.

특히 최근에는 ▲광주·전남 최초 ‘글로컬대학30’ 선정(2023년) ▲국립대학육성사업 광주·전남 유일 ‘S등급’ 획득(2024년) ▲호남권 4년제 국립대학 중 최고 신입생 충원율(99.7% 달성, 2025학년도) ▲전라남도 공모 ‘RISE(지역혁신중심 대학지원체계)’ 사업 10개 주관 과제 모두 선정 등 끊임없는 혁신으로 눈에 띄는 성과를 이루고 있다.

국립순천대학교는 개교 90주년을 기념하여 연말까지 지역민과 함께하는 여러 행사를 운영하며, 열린 캠퍼스의 역할을 되새길 계획이다. 특히 지난 5월 3일에는 어린이날과 가정의 달을 맞아 지역 어린이와 가족 5,000여 명이 찾은 ‘달달 무슨 달’ 행사가 성황리에 열렸으며, 오는 5월 28~29일에는 지역민과 청소년이 함께하는 ‘향림대동제’를 통해 지역과 함께하는 대학의 가치를 이어갈 예정이다.

Sunchon National University (President Byeong-Un Lee) will host its 90th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on May 14, in Wooseok Hall of the university’s 70th Anniversary Memorial Building. The event will bring together distinguished guests and members of the university community who have contributed to SNU’s development over the past nine decades.

Founded in 1935 as Suncheon Public Agricultural School through the donation of educator Kim Jong-Ik -who envisioned solving regional hardship through agriculture- the university has grown alongside the aspirations of local youth. It was elevated to a national comprehensive university in 1991 and has since established itself as a leading institution of higher education in Jeollanam-do Province.

This year marks a significant milestone in the university’s history. The anniversary ceremony will not only commemorate the legacy built over the past 90 years but also serve as a platform to envision the university’s journey toward the next century in partnership with the local community.

The ceremony will feature a series of meaningful programs, including welcoming remarks and congratulatory speeches, a 90th-anniversary media performance, an awards presentation honoring outstanding alumni, celebratory performances, and a commemorative tribute to the statue of founder Kim Jong-Ik. Renowned JTBC news anchor Anna Kyung Ahn will serve as the host, lending elegance and distinction to the event.

Sunchon National University has long played a vital role beyond that of a traditional academic institution. It has served as a regional education platform and a space for communication and collaboration, steadfastly supporting the local community through education and innovation.

In recent years, the university has achieved notable successes, including being selected as the first “Glocal University 30” in the Gwangju?Jeonnam region (2023), earning the top S-grade in the Ministry of Education’s National University Development Project (2024), attaining the highest freshman enrollment rate (99.7%) among national universities in the Honam region (2025 academic year), and securing all 10 project proposals submitted under the Jeollanam-do RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) initiative.

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, the university is planning a series of community-centered events throughout the year to reaffirm its role as an open and accessible campus. On May 3, more than 5,000 children and families participated in the festive “Sweet, What Month is This?” event, held in celebration of Children’s Day and Family Month. Upcoming celebrations include the “Hyangnim Daedong Festival,” scheduled for May 28?29, which will welcome local youth and residents to engage in a shared vision of community and growth.
