국립순천대학교(총장 이병운) 사범대학 화학교육과 공진택 교수 연구팀이 지난 4월 23일(화)부터 25일(목)까지 수원컨벤션센터에서 열린 대한화학회 제135회 학술발표회 총회 및 기기전시회에서 '동우화인켐㈜ 포스터상'을 수상했다.

대한화학회 학술발표회는 국내 최대 규모의 화학 전문 학술대회로, 매년 춘계와 추계로 나누어 개최되며 국내외 화학자들이 최신 연구 성과를 발표하고 교류하는 장이다. 1946년 창립된 대한화학회는 기초 및 응용화학 전 분야를 아우르는 활발한 학술 활동을 이어오며, 국내 화학 분야의 연구, 교육, 산업 발전을 선도해 온 대표적인 학술단체이다.

공진택 교수 연구팀은 「Recent Advances in Semi-Automatic Program for Single Crystal Structural Analysis of Complex Organic Molecules」를 주제로 포스터를 발표했다. 이번 연구에는 졸업생 김재호, 학부생 이상준(4학년), 강준혁(3학년), 이준용(3학년)이 참여했으며, 결정학 분석 분야의 전문가가 아닌 비전공 신진 연구자가 수행하기 어려운 복잡한 유기물의 단결정(Single-crystal) 구조 분석에 도움이 될 수 있도록, 분석 과정에 적절한 가이드라인을 제시해 줄 수 있는 프로그램을 개발하고 적용하는 내용을 소개했다.

총 910편의 포스터가 발표된 이번 행사에서는 65편이 우수 포스터로 선정됐으며, 이 가운데 공진택 교수 연구팀의 발표는 창의성과 학문적 기여도를 인정받아, 전체 포스터 중 단 5편에만 수여되는 ‘동우화인켐㈜ 포스터상’을 수상했다.

공진택 교수는 “학부 수업과 병행하며 심화 주제 연구를 수행하는 데 많은 부담이 있었을 학생들에게 주어진 값진 성과라 더욱 뜻깊게 생각한다”라며, “앞으로도 다양하고 심화된 연구 활동을 통해 화학교육의 질적 향상을 위해 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.

수상과 관련해 김재호 학생은 “연구 과정에서 많은 시행착오가 있었지만, 그 모든 과정이 모여 오늘의 결과로 이어졌다고 생각한다”라며, “지도교수님과 연구실 구성원들의 도움과 격려에 깊이 감사드리며, 앞으로도 의미 있는 연구를 지속해 훌륭한 연구자로 성장하고 싶다”라고 수상 소감을 전했다.

한편, 국립순천대학교 화학교육과는 과학적 사고력과 창의적 문제 해결 능력을 갖춘 미래형 과학교사 및 화학 연구자 양성을 목표로, 연구와 교육을 연계한 다양한 프로그램을 운영하고 있다.

Sunchon National University Professor Jin-Taek Gong's Research Team Wins Dongwoo Fine-Chem Poster Award

Recognized for Research on Semi-Automatic Structural Analysis Program at the Korean Chemical Society Meeting

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) announced that Professor Jin-Taek Gong from the Department of Chemistry Education and his research team received the "Dongwoo Fine-Chem Poster Award" at the 135th General Meeting and Conference of the Korean Chemical Society, held at Suwon Convention Center from April 23 to 25.

The Korean Chemical Society meeting is the largest chemistry-focused academic conference in Korea, organized biannually in spring and fall. It brings together domestic and international chemists to share and discuss the latest research achievements. Since its establishment in 1946, the Korean Chemical Society has led academic activities across all fields of basic and applied chemistry, contributing significantly to research, education, and industry development in Korea.

Professor Gong’s team presented a poster titled "Recent Advances in Semi-Automatic Program for Single Crystal Structural Analysis of Complex Organic Molecules." The research team included alumnus Jae-ho Kim and undergraduate students Sang-jun Lee (senior), Jun-hyuk Kang (junior), and Jun-yong Lee (junior). Their study introduced a program designed to assist non-expert researchers in analyzing complex organic molecules through single-crystal structural analysis, providing structured guidelines to facilitate the highly specialized crystallographic analysis process.

Among 910 posters presented during the conference, only 65 were selected as outstanding works, and Professor Gong’s team was further distinguished by receiving one of just five "Dongwoo Fine-Chem Poster Awards," recognizing the creativity and scholarly contribution of their research.

Professor Gong remarked, "This award is especially meaningful as it acknowledges the efforts of students who conducted advanced research alongside their regular coursework, often under significant pressure. We will continue to enhance the quality of chemistry education through diverse and in-depth research activities."

Student Jae-ho Kim shared his reflections, saying, "There were many trials and errors during the research process, but each experience ultimately contributed to our achievement today. I am deeply grateful for the guidance and encouragement from Professor Gong and the research lab members. Building on this experience, I aspire to continue conducting meaningful research and to grow into a dedicated researcher."

Meanwhile, the Department of Chemistry Education at Sunchon National University continues to pursue various activities that integrate research and education, aiming to cultivate future-oriented science educators and chemical researchers equipped with scientific thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
