…지리산국립공원 일대서 자연·문화 체험으로 유학생과 가족 구성원의 지역 적응력과 정착 의지 높여

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 지난 10월 31일부터 11월 1일까지 1박 2일간 지리산국립공원 일대에서 외국인 유학생 가족 정주 지원 프로그램(2차)을 운영했다고 밝혔다.

지리산국립공원전남사무소와의 협력으로 마련된 이번 프로그램에는 방글라데시, 인도, 중국, 우즈베키스탄 등 4개국 출신 외국인 유학생과 가족 등 7가족이 참여해 지역의 자연과 문화를 체험하며 지역사회에 대한 이해와 소속감을 높였다.

첫째 날에는 지리산의 대표 깃대종인 반달가슴곰 생태체험 프로그램을 통해 멸종위기종 복원사업과 생태 보전의 중요성을 배우는 시간을 가졌다. 이어 전통 찻상 만들기 체험과 정원 산책을 통해 가족 간 협동심을 다지고, 유학생 가족들이 한국 생활 속 어려움과 정주 관련 애로사항을 자유롭게 나누며 소통하는 시간도 마련됐다.

둘째 날에는 친환경 비누 만들기 체험을 통해 지속가능한 생활방식을 배우고, 지역 해설사와 함께 천은사와 천은저수지 둘레길을 탐방하며 지리산의 가을 정취를 만끽했다.인도 출신 유학생 아카시(Akasi) 학생은 “지리산의 자연이 정말 아름다웠고, 아내와 함께 다양한 체험을 하며 잊지 못할 추억을 만들었다”고 소감을 전했다.

국립순천대학교는 교육부 글로컬대학30 및 RISE(지역혁신중심 대학지원체계) 사업과 연계해 외국인 유학생의 지역 정착과 다문화 이해 증진을 위한 다양한 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 이번 행사 역시 그 일환으로, 외국인 유학생과 가족이 지리산의 자연과 문화를 직접 체험하며 지역사회에 한 걸음 더 가까이 다가가는 계기가 되었다.

서강석 국제교류교육본부장은 “유학생 가족이 지역의 자연과 문화를 함께 체험하며 지역사회에 대한 소속감과 정착 의지를 높일 수 있었기를 바란다”라며, “앞으로도 지자체·공공기관과의 협력을 통해 외국인 유학생과 가족이 지역에 안정적으로 정착할 수 있도록 다양한 방식으로 지원해 나가겠다”라고 밝혔다.

Sunchon National University (SCNU) Holds Settlement Support Program for International Student Families

- Enhancing sense of belonging through nature and culture experiences in Jirisan National Park

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) successfully held the 2nd Settlement Support Program for International Student Families from October 31 to November 1 in the Jirisan National Park area. The two-day program invited seven families of international students from Bangladesh, India, China, and Uzbekistan to experience local nature and culture while fostering a deeper understanding of and connection to the local community.

Organized in cooperation with the Jirisan National Park Jeonnam Office, the program offered a range of cultural and ecological activities to strengthen family bonds and promote local engagement. On the first day, participants attended an eco-learning session on the Asiatic black bear, a symbolic species of Jirisan, learning about endangered species restoration and ecological conservation. They also joined a traditional tea table-making workshop and garden walk, sharing their personal experiences of living in Korea and discussing challenges related to settlement and adaptation.

The second day featured an eco-friendly soap-making workshop emphasizing sustainable living practices, followed by a guided tour of Cheoneunsa Temple and the Cheoneun Reservoir trail, where participants enjoyed the serene autumn landscape of Jirisan. Akasi, an international student from India, commented, “The nature of Jirisan was truly breathtaking. Experiencing these activities with my wife in such a beautiful place became a very special memory.”

Seo Kang-seok, Dean of the Office of International Affairs, stated, “This program was designed to help international student families experience local culture and nature while strengthening their sense of belonging and willingness to settle in the community. SCNU will continue to collaborate with local governments and public institutions to support the stable settlement of international students and their families.”

SCNU continues to operate various initiatives promoting regional settlement and multicultural understanding among international students in connection with the Ministry of Education’s Glocal University 30 and RISE (Regional Innovation System for Education) projects. As part of these efforts, this program provided international students and their families with a meaningful opportunity to experience the nature and culture of Jirisan while growing closer to the local community.
