- 대학 구성원과 지역 인사 1,000여 명 초청해 기념식 성황리 개최 … “90년의 실천, 다가올 100주년을 향한 연결” 다짐

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 5월 14일 학내 70주년기념관 우석홀에서 내외빈 1천 명을 초청하여 ‘개교 90주년 기념식’을 성황리에 개최했다고 밝혔다.

올해 개교기념식은 1935년 개교 이래 90년간 이어진 교육 실천의 역사를 돌아보고, 100주년을 향한 미래 비전을 함께 모색하는 의미 있는 자리로 마련됐다.

이날 국립순천대 허상만(3대)·고영진(9대) 총장 등 역대 총장과 강문식 국립순천대 발전후원회 위원장, 김영록 전라남도지사, 김문수·권향엽 국회의원, 노관규 순천시장, 정인화 광양시장, 공영민 고흥군수, 김순호 구례군수, 시·도의원 등 지역 주요 인사를 비롯해 임경호 전국 국공립대학교 총장협의회장(국립공주대 총장), 송하철 국가중심 국공립대학교 총장협의회장(국립목포대 총장), 박상철 광주·전남지역 대학교 총장협의회장(호남대 총장), 언론 및 산업계 관계자, 동문, 학생과 주요 보직자, 교직원 등 1,000여 명이 참석해 국립순천대의 역사와 성장을 함께 축하했다.

행사는 현악 3중주의 식전 공연을 시작으로 ▲개교 90주년 홍보영상 상영 ▲연혁 낭독 ▲미디어 퍼포먼스 ‘90년의 역사, 다가올 100년’ ▲이병운 총장 기념사 ▲내외빈 축사 ▲‘자랑스러운 순천대인’ 시상 ▲축하공연 순으로 진행됐다. 

이병운 총장은 기념사에서 “국립순천대의 90년은 단지 축적된 시간이 아니라, 지역과 함께해 온 실천의 역사”라며, “그간 우리 대학은 진리를 추구하되 언제나 현실과 연결해 새로운 가치를 창조해 왔으며, 앞으로도 실천과 연결을 바탕으로 고등교육의 새로운 가능성을 열어가겠다”라고 밝혔다.

이어 “AI 대전환기를 맞아 끊임없이 질문하고, 실천하며, 지역과 세계를 연결하는 대학으로 도약해야 한다”라며, “찬란했던 90년의 역사를 넘어, 대학의 상징인 낙우송의 가지처럼 100년의 미래를 향해 힘차게 뻗어나가자”라고 강조했다.

이날 기념식에서는 지역과 사회 각 분야에서 활약하고 있는 세 명의 동문과 교원을 ‘자랑스러운 순천대인’으로 선정해 시상하였다. 수상자는 허순구 광양농협 조합장, 이인혁 미국 조지아대 교수, 여현 국립순천대 인공지능공학부 교수다. 이들은 각자의 분야에서 탁월한 성과를 이루고 대학과 지역사회 발전에 이바지한 공로를 인정받았다.

축하공연은 특유의 서정성과 실험적 감성으로 사랑받고 있는 가수 안예은과 순천시립합창단의 남성중창 무대로 꾸며졌으며, 감동적인 하모니로 행사에 따뜻한 여운을 더했다. 본 행사 이후에는 기념 오찬이 이어졌으며, 학생과 교직원을 위한 별도 캠퍼스 무료 점심도 마련되어 전 구성원이 함께 90주년의 의미를 나누었다.

국립순천대학교는 1935년 순천공립농업학교로 출범한 이후, 1979년 순천농업전문대학, 1982년 4년제 순천대학, 1991년 종합대학인 국립순천대학교로 개편되며 지역의 대표 고등교육기관으로 성장해 왔다. 1990년대 이후 학부·대학원 체계를 정비하고, 2000년대에는 산학협력, 국제화, 교육 특성화 부문에서 전국 주요 국립대학들과 어깨를 나란히 해왔다.

최근에는 ‘글로컬대학30’ 선정을 계기로 3대 특화 분야(그린스마트팜, 애니메이션·문화콘텐츠, 우주항공·첨단소재) 중심의 스쿨제로 전환하고, 전공의 경계를 허무는 교육을 실천하는 중이다. 또한, △순천·광양·고흥 ‘지산학캠퍼스’ 조성 △전남형 ‘라이즈(RISE) 사업’ 참여 등을 통해 지역과 세계를 연결하는 거점대학으로의 입지를 더욱 공고히 다지고 있다.

국립순천대학교는 개교 90주년을 기념하여 다양한 기획 사업과 외부 협력 기반을 확대해 나가고 있으며, 개교 100주년을 향한 중장기 발전계획 수립, 글로컬 융합전공 신설, 글로벌 캠퍼스 구축 등 다음 세대를 위한 도약 준비에 박차를 가하고 있다.

Sunchon National University Celebrates 90th Anniversary with Commemorative Ceremony

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) held its 90th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony on May 14 at Wooseok Hall in the 70th Anniversary Memorial Building, inviting over 1,000 guests, including dignitaries, alumni, and university members.

This year's celebration served as a meaningful occasion to reflect on the university’s 90-year history of educational practice since its founding in 1935, while also sharing a collective vision for its centennial future.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures including former university presidents Heo Sang-man (3rd) and Ko Young-jin (9th), Kang Moon-sik, Chair of the SNU Development Foundation, Jeonnam Governor Kim Yung-rok, National Assembly members Kim Moon-soo and Kwon Hyang-yeop, Suncheon Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu, Gwangyang Mayor Jeong In-hwa, Goheung County Governor Gong Young-min, Gurye County Governor Kim Soon-ho, as well as city and provincial council members. Also in attendance were Im Kyung-ho, Chair of the Korean Council of National University Presidents (President of Kongju National University), Song Ha-cheol, Chair of the Council of Regional National University Presidents (President of Mokpo National University), Park Sang-cheol, Chair of the Gwangju-Jeonnam University Presidents’ Council (President of Honam University), members of the media and industry, alumni, students, university executives, and faculty and staff.

The event opened with a prelude by a string trio, followed by a promotional video marking the university’s 90th anniversary, a formal reading of the university’s history, a media performance titled “90 Years of History, Toward the Next 100,” President Lee’s commemorative address, congratulatory remarks from guests, the “Proud SCNU Alumni” award ceremony, and celebratory performances.

In his address, President Lee stated, “The 90-year history of Sunchon National University is not merely an accumulation of time but a living record of practice in partnership with the local community.” He continued, “Our university has always sought truth while remaining grounded in reality, creating new value through connection and action. Going forward, we will open new possibilities in higher education through practical engagement and integration.”

He also emphasized, “As we face the great transformation brought by AI, we must become a university that constantly questions, acts, and connects local communities with the world,” and added, “Let us reach beyond our brilliant 90 years and stretch boldly into the next 100, like the branches of the university’s symbol, the dawn redwood.”

As part of the ceremony, the university honored three individuals as “Proud SCNU Alumni” for their contributions to society and the university: Heo Soon-gu (President, Gwangyang Agricultural Cooperative), Lee In-hyuk (Professor, University of Georgia, USA), and Yeo Hyun (Professor, Department of Artificial Intelligence Engineering, SCNU).

Celebratory performances included a lyrical yet experimental musical performance by singer Ahn Ye-eun and a moving male choir performance by the Suncheon City Choir, which left a lasting impression on attendees. A commemorative luncheon followed the main event, along with a complimentary campus lunch for students and staff, allowing the entire university community to celebrate together.

Founded in 1935 as Suncheon Public Agricultural School, SCNU has evolved through several stages: Suncheon Agricultural Junior College in 1979, a four-year college in 1982, and finally Sunchon National University in 1991. Since the 1990s, it has strengthened its undergraduate and graduate programs, and in the 2000s, advanced in industry-academic cooperation, internationalization, and educational specialization, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with leading national universities.

Recently, after being selected for the “Glocal University 30” initiative, SCNU has begun transitioning into a “school-based” system focusing on three specialized areas: Green Smart Farming, Animation & Cultural Content, and Aerospace & Advanced Materials. The university is also reinforcing its role as a regional hub through initiatives like the establishment of “Jisan-Hak Campus” sites in Suncheon, Gwangyang, and Goheung, and active participation in Jeonnam’s RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) project.

In celebration of its 90th anniversary, SCNU is expanding strategic projects and external partnerships, preparing for the next leap forward with long-term development plans, the establishment of new glocal interdisciplinary majors, and the construction of a global campus for future generations.
