- 첨단소재·바이오 분야 인재양성 위한 공동 교육·연구 플랫폼 구축

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 4월 22일, 세계적인 과학 기업 써모 피셔 사이언티픽(Thermo Fisher Scientific, 이하 써모 피셔, 대표 석수진)과  업무협약을 체결하고, 공동실험실습관 내‘에듀센터’ 개소식을 함께 개최했다고 밝혔다.

글로벌 과학기술 기업 써모 피셔는 생명과학, 분석기술, 진단 분야에서 폭넓은 솔루션을 제공하고 있다. 이번 협약은 바이오, 이차전지 등 첨단소재 분야에서의 전략적 파트너십 구축과 함께, RISE 사업 및 글로컬대학 특화분야에 대한 협력 확대를 주요 내용으로 담고 있다.

업무협약과 개소식을 겸한 이날 행사에는 국립순천대학교 이병운 총장, 문승태 대외협력부총장을 비롯해 써모 피셔 사이언티픽 코리아 석수진 대표, 김한수 부사장 등 주요 관계자들이 참석하였다. 또한, 한국한의학연구원, (재)전남바이오진흥원, (사)전남화장품산업혁신협회 등 지역 내 연구기관 및 기업 관계자들도 자리해 새롭게 조성된 ‘에듀센터’를 둘러보았다.

국립순천대 공동실험실습관 3층에 문을 연 ‘에듀센터’는 양 기관이 함께 설계·구축한 첨단 교육공간으로, 써모 피셔의 디자인 및 설계 작업을 거쳐 지난해 12월 완공되었다. 최신 실험기술 프로그램과 연구 기자재를 활용한 실습 교육을 통해 현장 중심의 실무형 인재를 양성하는 거점으로 기능하며, 향후에는 산학 공동 장비 활용, 실험 장비 운영 교육, 산업현장 연계 실습 등 실질적인 산학 협력의 플랫폼으로 확장될 예정이다.

국립순천대학교와 써모 피셔는 향후 에듀센터를 중심으로 ▲첨단 소재·바이오 분야 산학 교육과정 운영 ▲최신 실험기술 교육 지원 ▲LAB 운영 및 공간 컨설팅 ▲기업연계 청년 취·창업 프로그램 등을 공동 추진하며, 실질적인 연구역량 강화와 청년 일자리 창출에 힘쓸 계획이다.

국립순천대 이민아 공동실험실습관 관장은 “써모 피셔의 지원에 깊이 감사드리며, 이번 개소식을 계기로 연구인프라를 더욱 고도화하고 산학협력을 확장할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”고 전했다. 석수진 써모 피셔 사이언티픽 코리아 대표이사는 “국립순천대학교와의 이번 협력이 전남 지역의 실무형 인재 양성과 연구 기반 확대는 물론, 첨단소재 및 바이오 분야의 공동 연구와 혁신을 촉진하고, 산업과 지역사회가 함께 성장하는 기반이 되기를 기대한다”라고 소감을 밝혔다.

국립순천대학교는 이번 협약을 바탕으로 산학연 협력의 실질적 기반을 강화하고, 지역과 함께하는 미래형 교육·연구 생태계를 조성해 나갈 계획이다.

Sunchon National University Signs MOU with Thermo Fisher Scientific Korea and Opens Joint “Edu-Center”

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Thermo Fisher Scientific Korea, the Korean branch of the global scientific company Thermo Fisher Scientific, on April 22. The MOU signing was accompanied by the opening ceremony of the newly established “Edu-Center,” located within the university’s Joint Laboratory Practice Center.

Thermo Fisher Scientific is a global leader in providing comprehensive solutions in life sciences, analytical technologies, and diagnostics. This agreement lays the groundwork for strategic collaboration in advanced material fields such as biotechnology and secondary batteries. It also outlines plans for expanded cooperation aligned with key priorities of the RISE (Regional Innovation System & Education) initiative and the Glocal University 30 project.

The event was attended by key representatives from both institutions, including Sunchon National University President Lee Byung-woon and Vice President for External Affairs Moon Seung-tae, as well as Thermo Fisher Scientific Korea President Seok Soo-jin and Vice President Kim Han-soo. Additionally, officials from regional institutions such as the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine, Jeonnam Bioindustry Foundation, and Jeonnam Cosmetic Industry Innovation Association joined the event and toured the Edu-Center.

The Edu-Center, located on the third floor of the Joint Laboratory Practice Center, was co-designed and built by Sunchon National University and Thermo Fisher. Completed in December 2023, the center was created with design and technical support from Thermo Fisher. It is equipped with cutting-edge research instruments and offers experimental technology training programs aimed at developing job-ready talent. Moving forward, it will serve as a platform for industry-academia cooperation through shared equipment usage, training in lab management, and internship opportunities linked to real-world industrial settings.

Sunchon National University and Thermo Fisher will jointly operate the Edu-Center to support practical training and industry engagement. Their collaborative efforts will focus on operating industry-academia programs in advanced materials and biotechnology, offering training in state-of-the-art experimental techniques, providing consultation on lab management and spatial design, and running youth employment and entrepreneurship programs connected to local industry.

Lee Min-ah, Director of the Joint Laboratory Practice Center, stated, “We deeply appreciate Thermo Fisher’s support. We expect that this new center will further enhance our research infrastructure and expand meaningful industry-academia cooperation.” Seok Soo-jin, President of Thermo Fisher Scientific Korea, remarked, “We hope this partnership with Sunchon National University will drive workforce development and expand research capacity in the Jeonnam region, while also fostering innovation and sustainable growth in advanced material and biotechnology sectors.”

With this partnership, Sunchon National University aims to strengthen the foundation for practical cooperation between academia, industry, and research institutions, and to build a forward-looking educational and research ecosystem in close collaboration with the local community.
