- 펭수와 그레이트 마인즈 제작 비화 통해 창의력과 콘텐츠 가치 조명

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 김명중 前 EBS 사장을 초청해 ‘문화콘텐츠의 힘: ‘펭수’와 ‘위대한 수업, 그레이트 마인즈’ 콘텐츠는 어떻게 탄생하였나?’를 주제로 ‘명사와 함께 하는 교양 산책’ 4월 특강을 개최했다고 밝혔다.

이번 특강은 교육혁신본부 교양교육원 주관으로 지난 4월 29일 학내 70주년기념관 초석홀에서 열렸으며, 교직원과 학생, 지역민 등 약 120명이 참석해 높은 관심을 보였다.

강연에 나선 김명중 전 사장은 “문화콘텐츠의 힘을 키우기 위해서는 다양한 경험과 트렌드에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 창의의 근육을 길러야 한다”고 강조하며, “문화예술은 급변하는 시대에 민감하게 반응하고, 종합예술로 확장될 수 있는 잠재력을 지니고 있다”고 말했다.

그는 EBS 대표 캐릭터 ‘펭수’ 사례를 통해 하나의 콘텐츠가 방송, 행사, 시상식 등 다양한 분야에서 강력한 IP로 성장할 수 있는 과정을 소개하며, “성공한 콘텐츠는 새로운 신성장 동력이 될 수 있다”고 강조했다. 이어 ‘위대한 수업, 그레이트 마인즈’ 제작 과정을 공유하며, “세계 석학들의 마음을 움직인 건 제작진의 헌신과 작지만 진정성 있는 마음이었다”고 밝혀, 콘텐츠 제작 이면의 정성과 태도에 대한 깊은 공감을 이끌어냈다.

또한, 김명중 전 사장은 “글로컬 시대, 로컬에서 출발한 인재가 글로벌 무대에 진출하기 위해선 변화보다 앞서는 창의성과 도전정신이 필요하다”며, 순천대 학생들을 향해 다양한 경험의 중요성을 당부했다.

현재 김명중 전 사장은 유럽경영문화원장으로 재직 중이며, 공영방송과 교육기관 등에서 강연과 자문 활동을 이어가고 있다. 주요 저서로는 『리더는 마음을 만지는 사람이다』(2023), 『포스트 코로나 대한민국』(2020), 『디지털 위성방송론』(1997) 등이 있다.

국립순천대학교 손승남 교양교육원장은 “이번 특강은 문화콘텐츠의 가치와 역할을 다시금 성찰하는 뜻깊은 시간이었다”며, “앞으로도 학내 구성원과 지역민의 글로컬 역량을 키우는 다양한 주제의 특강을 꾸준히 마련해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다.

Sunchon National Universtiy Hosts April Special Lecture with Former EBS President

- Exploring the Power of Cultural Content through the Stories Behind ‘Pengsoo’ and ‘Great Minds’

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) recently hosted a special lecture titled “The Power of Cultural Content: How 'Pengsoo' and 'Great Minds' Were Created”, featuring Myungjoong Kim, former President of EBS. The lecture was part of the university’s monthly liberal arts program, “A Stroll Through Knowledge with Distinguished Figures,” organized by the Institute for General Education.

Held on April 29 at the Choseok Hall of the university’s 70th Anniversary Building, the event attracted approximately 120 attendees, including faculty, students, and local residents.

During the lecture, Kim emphasized the importance of cultivating “creative muscles” by embracing diverse experiences and understanding current trends. He noted, “Cultural content reacts sensitively to the rapid changes of the times and has the potential to expand into comprehensive forms of art.”

Highlighting the iconic EBS character ‘Pengsoo,’ Kim illustrated how a single character can evolve into a powerful intellectual property (IP) across broadcasts, events, and awards shows. “Successful content can become a new engine of growth,” he asserted.

Kim also shared behind-the-scenes stories from the acclaimed series “Great Minds,” explaining that it was “the dedication and heartfelt sincerity of the production team” that ultimately moved some of the world’s leading intellectuals to participate. His insights resonated deeply with the audience, offering a rare glimpse into the values that drive meaningful content creation.

Addressing SNU students directly, Kim encouraged them to embrace creativity and take initiative, saying, “To grow from local roots into global talent, you must be willing to change faster than society itself.”

Currently, Kim serves as Director of the European Institute of Business and Culture and continues to engage in lectures and consulting across public broadcasting and educational institutions. His major publications include “A Leader Touches the Heart” (2023), “Post-COVID Korea” (2020), and “Theory of Digital Satellite Broadcasting” (1997).

Professor Son Seung-nam, Director of the Institute for General Education, remarked, “This special lecture was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the value and role of cultural content. We will continue to offer diverse and engaging lectures to strengthen the global competencies of our university community and local citizens alike.”
