- 2월 2일 세계 습지의 날을 전후로 순천만 습지와 관련된 생태·문화를 주제로

포럼, 공연, 전시 등을 개최하여, 관심 있는 분들과 함께

공유하고 감상할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

- 순천만 습지와 두루미를 주제로 한 재미있고 창의적인 콘텐츠,

렉처 퍼포먼스, 시민 참여형 활동을 통해 예술가 간의 교류와 참여를 활성화 한다.

그리고 이러한 가치 있는 문화예술 활동이 지역사회와 연결되면서 지속되도록 한다.

세계 습지의 날에 맞춰 준비하고 계신데요.

어떤 취지로 마련되는 포럼인가요?

2월 2일 세계 습지의 날을 맞이하여 지구를 소중히 여기면서 기후변화에 따른 순천만 습지 보전의 가치를 널리 알리고 더 나아가 순천만과 관련된 생태·문화를 공유하고자 이번 포럼을 마련하였습니다.

순천만 습지와 두루미를 주제로 한 재미있고 창의적인 내용을 콘텐츠로 개발하고 퍼포먼스, 시민 참여형 활동을 통해 서로 교류하면서 지역사회와 연결된 가치 있는 문화예술 활동으로 지속적으로 실천해 나가고자 합니다.

2> 이번 포럼의 주제가

‘습지와 전통지식, 문화유산의 가치 조명’입니다.

‘습지와 전통지식’이라는 게 무엇을 의미하는지

궁금합니다?

순천은 역사적으로도 ‘순천학’이라고 불리는 남도문화의 유산을 많이 지니고 있구요, 예술과 문화의 풍부한 무형 유산을 가지고 있습니다. 현재의 시점에서 보면 순천은 순천만 갯벌을 보전하여 성공한 사례를 갖고 있어 타 지자체에서 벤치마킹을 하려는 등 자연보전에 대한 가치를 지니고 있습니다. 또한

작년 12월에 중국 포양호 습지를 다녀왔는데요, 중국에서도 순천만의 성공 사례를 배우고 싶어합니다. 이러한 지점에서 볼 때 습지에 대한 전통지식과 문화유산을 현대적으로 재해석하여 창의적인 콘텐츠를 개발하여 새로운 가치를 창출하는데 이번 포럼의 의의가 있습니다.

3> 이번 포럼은 전시, 공연, 체험이

한데 어우러지도록 진행된다고 들었는데요.

이틀간 운영되는 프로그램 내용도 소개를 들어볼까요?

첫날 2일에는 학술 발표 사이에 시낭송, 시조창, 노래와 춤 등을 관객 참여형으로 진행할 예정입니다. 그리고 로비에서 순천만 흑두루미와 정원의 새에 대한 그림 (세밀화), 캐리커쳐, 소품 등이 작은 규모로 전시될 예정입니다. 둘쨰날 3일에는 순천만 습지를 탐방하면서 중간에 생태춤과 흑두루미춤 등을 추는 체험 활동이 병행될 예정입니다.

4> 특히 국제포럼인 만큼 해외 다른 나라들의

생태예술 활동도 소개된다고 들었는데요.

어떤 나라에서 참여하는지,

또 이들은 어떤 활동 사례들을 보여줄 계획인지 궁금해요?

네덜란드와 베트남의 생태예술가들이 직접 온라인 상에서 퍼포먼스를 하거나 영상을 통하여 생태예술 활동의 포트폴리오 등을 소개할 예정입니다.

5> 그런가 하면 습지를 보전하기 위한

국제 협력 사례도 발표된다고 들었습니다.

어떤 내용인지 살짝 소개를 해 주시죠!

중국의 소수민족춤을 비롯하여 아시아습지학교의 활동도 일부 들어볼 수 있습니다. 지난 12월에 중국 하이난에서 개최되었던 아시아습지학교 총회에서 만났던 전문가들과 학생들을 통하여 중국의 습지보전과 문화예술 활동을 영상으로 만날 수 있습니다. 그리고 태국의 경우에 2일 같은 날에 부리람에서 Sarus 두루미를 방사하는 행사가 열리는데요, 작년 영상을 통하여 태국에서 진행되고 있는 습지 보전과 태국 두루미 보호에 대한 활동을 엿볼 수 있습니다.

6> 참여자들이 순천의 생태와 문화자원을

직접 체험할 수 있도록

도심과 습지를 탐방하는 프로그램도 구성돼 있던데요.

어떤 곳들을 탐방하게 되나요?

아무래도 도심보다 순천만 습지를 방문하여 탐사선을 타고 습지를 관찰하고 용산을 걸으면서 흑두루미와 철새 그리고 습지 생물들에 대하여 배우는 시간을 가질 예정입니다.

7> 교수님께서 몸 담고 있는

순천대학교 두루미과학예술센터에서는

그 동안 순천만 습지와 흑두루미를 주제로

IT와 문화예술이 융합된 공연을 이어오셨는데요.

이번 국제포럼에서도 공연이 선보여진다고요?

3일에 순천만 탐방이 끝날 무렵에 간단하게 공연을 할 예정이구요, 4시경에 장산갯벌 또는 와온갯벌로 이동하여 미리 준비한 “흑두루미 기다리며”음악에 맞추어 퍼포먼스를 하고 영상으로 촬영할 예정입니다. 이 음악은 제가 작사하고 서혁신 가수가 작곡하여 녹음한 곡입니다.

8> 그렇다면 교수님께서는 순천만이

생태·문화 거점으로서 어떤 가능성을

갖고 있다고 보시는지도 궁금합니다?

매우 중요하다고 봅니다. 작년 12월에 중국 포양호 담당자와 국제두루미재단의 동아시아 담당자가 순천만의 성공 사례를 소개해 달라고 할 정도로 중요한 가치를 가지고 있는 곳이 순천만입니다. 하지만 순천만의 물리적 보전을 넘어서서 순천을 대표하는 무형의 콘텐츠 내지 브랜드로 나아가기 위하여 순천시와 순천대학교, 전문가들의 협업이 필요하다고 봅니다. 이번 포럼이 그런 장을 준비하는 과정이라고 생각합니다.

9> 생태 보존과 예술의 만남!

이런 활동이 필요한 무엇이라고 생각하시는지...

활동 계획과 목표도 궁금합니다?

“지구를 지키자”라고 하면 너무 거창하고 “습지를 보전하자”하면 사람들이 별로 관심을 두지 않습니다. 그런데도 사람들은 가뭄이 든다, 장마가 온다, 폭설이 내린다, 코로나가 유행한다 등등 자신의 몸과 관련되는 기후변화에는 상당히 민감하게 반응합니다. 이러한 간극 사이를 메울 수 있는 것이 예술활동이라고 봅니다. 그래서 생태보전과 예술, IT의 융합이 중요하며 앞으로 순천이 추구해야 할 고귀한 가치라고 생각합니다. 그런 방향으로 두루미과학예술센터가 조금씩 해 나가고 있습니다. 2월에 하는 행사인만큼 여러 가지 여건이 열악한데요, 지속가능한 국제포럼이 되도록 향후에 순천시와 순천대학교가 적극 지원해 주면 좋겠습니다.

1> The 2026 Suncheon Bay Ecological Arts Festival International Forum

is being prepared in time for World Wetlands Day.

What is the purpose of this forum?

Jun:

In celebration of World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, we have organized this forum to cherish the Earth, raise awareness of the value of preserving the Suncheon Bay wetlands in the face of climate change, and further share the ecology and culture related to Suncheon Bay.

We will develop engaging and creative content on the Suncheon Bay wetlands and cranes. We will also foster interaction through lectures, performances, and citizen participation activities, and continue to implement this valuable cultural and artistic activity as a connection to the local community.

(* For example, we prepared a forum that featured audience participation, a festival-like format, with academic presentations on cultural and artistic activities related to the Suncheon Bay tidal flats, along with simple performances. *)

2> The theme of this forum is

"Illuminating the Value of Wetlands, Traditional Knowledge, and Cultural Heritage."

I'm curious about what "wetlands and traditional knowledge" means.

Jun:

Suncheon has historically held a significant portion of the southern region's cultural heritage, known as "Suncheon Studies," and boasts a rich intangible heritage of art and culture. From a current perspective, Suncheon's successful conservation of the Suncheon Bay tidal flats has earned it a place in other local governments, demonstrating its value in nature conservation. Furthermore,

I visited the Poyang Lake Wetland in China last December, and China is eager to learn from Suncheon Bay's success story. From this perspective, the significance of this forum lies in its ability to reinterpret traditional knowledge and cultural heritage related to wetlands in a contemporary manner, develop creative content, and create new value.

3> I heard this forum will be a fusion of exhibitions, performances, and experiences. Can you explain the two-day program?

Jun:

On the first day, the second, there will be audience participation through poetry recitations, sijo (Korean traditional song) singing, songs, and dances between academic presentations. Additionally, a small-scale exhibition of paintings (details), caricatures, and props about the hooded cranes of Suncheon Bay and other birds in the garden will be held in the lobby. On the second day, the third, there will be a tour of the Suncheon Bay Wetlands, along with experiential activities such as ecological dances and hooded crane dances.

4> As this is an international forum, I heard that ecological art activities from other countries will also be showcased.

Which countries are participating?

And what examples of activities they plan to showcase?

Jun:

Eco-artists from the Netherlands and Vietnam will present their portfolios of ecological art activities through online performances or videos.

5> I also heard that examples of international cooperation for wetland conservation will be presented.

Can you briefly explain what they are?

Jun:

We'll also hear about some of the activities of the Asian Wetland School, including Chinese ethnic minority dances. We'll also see videos of China's wetland conservation and cultural and artistic activities, presented through experts and students we met at the Asian Wetland School General Assembly held in Hainan, China last December. In Thailand, a Sarus crane release event will be held in Buriram on the same day, the 2nd. Videos from last year provide a glimpse into Thailand's wetland conservation and Thai crane protection efforts.

6> I heard there's also a program designed to allow participants to experience Suncheon's ecological and cultural resources firsthand,

taking them on a tour of the city and wetlands.

What places will they visit?

Jun:

We plan to visit the Suncheon Bay Wetland rather than the city, where we'll ride a survey boat to observe the wetlands, and walk through Yongsan to learn about hooded cranes, migratory birds, and wetland life.

7> The Suncheon National University Crane Science and Arts Center, where you work, has been hosting performances that combine IT and culture and art, focusing on the Suncheon Bay wetlands and hooded cranes.

I heard you'll be presenting a performance at this international forum as well?

Jun:

We're planning a brief performance at the end of the Suncheon Bay tour on the 3rd. Then, around 4 p.m., we'll move to the Jangsan or Waon Tidal Flats, where we'll perform to the previously prepared song "Waiting for the Hooded Cranes" and film it. The song was written by me and composed and recorded by singer Seo Hyuk-shin.

8> So, Professor, I'm also curious about the potential of Suncheon Bay as an ecological and cultural hub.

Jun:

I believe it's very important. Last December, the Poyang Lake Cooperative in China and the East Asia Cooperative for the International Crane Foundation asked us to share Suncheon Bay's success stories. Suncheon Bay holds such significant value. However, I believe collaboration between Suncheon City, Suncheon National University, and experts is necessary to move beyond the physical preservation of Suncheon Bay and develop it into an intangible content or brand representing Suncheon. I believe this forum is a stepping stone to that goal.

9> The intersection of ecological conservation and art!

What do you think is necessary for such activities?

I'm also curious about the future plans and goals of the Suncheon National University Crane Science and Art Center.

Jun:

"Let's protect the Earth" seems too grandiose, and "let's preserve wetlands" doesn't generate much interest. Yet, people are quite sensitive to climate change, which affects their own bodies?droughts, monsoon rains, heavy snow, the COVID-19 pandemic, and so on. I believe artistic activities can bridge this gap. Therefore, I believe the convergence of ecological conservation, art, and IT is crucial and a noble value that Suncheon should pursue in the future. The Crane Science and Art Center is making strides in this direction. As this event is held in February, the conditions are challenging. I hope that Suncheon City and Suncheon National University will actively support this event in the future to ensure it becomes a sustainable international forum.

Introduction to Crane Science and Arts Center

Based on the planning of Suncheon National University Professor Youngcook Jun (Center Director), the Crane Science and Arts Center is actively engaged in developing convergence performance content based on scientific and artistic

exploration of the Suncheon Bay Wetland and cranes in cooperation with the International Crane Foundation of the United States. With support from the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE), the Suncheon Bay Conference was held at the “Korean Spring” festival held in Nantes, France in May 2019, and featured hooded crane storytelling and creative

dance.

Additionally, in November 2021, as part of Suncheon City's cultural city's private international exchange project, a collaboration performance was

conducted using percussion music from Izumi City, Japan and a white heron video from Ningbo City, China, under the theme of cranes between Korea,

China and Japan. In March 2022, was performed, and in October 2023, was performed at Suncheon Bay National Garden. In addition, the video was produced in an XR-based studio. In November, a tea garden performance of was held in Suncheon Bay and Cheorwon under the .

In 2024, with the support of Suncheon City Culture and Arts Department, was created. In addition, with the support of the Jeonnam Cultural Foundation, the performance based on

Theater> was presented at Ocheon Green Square and received a good response from the audience, and a follow-up performance was held at Suncheon Bay Wetland Park.

In particular, in November 2025, a performance to remove the utility poles at Suncheon Bay was created and held at the Suncheon Bay Wetland site in conjunction with the Suncheon Bay Black-faced Crane International Symposium, widely publicizing the purpose of preserving Suncheon Bay together with citizens.
