- 순천시·지역 고교와 협력, 생태 기반 교육으로 지역인재 양성 기반 다져

-순천시 교육특구 지정을 기반으로, 교원 연수·대학생 강사 양성 과정도 운영해 눈길

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 순천시 및 순천제일고와 함께 2025학년도 고교학점제 지역특화 교육과정인 「기후변화와 순천만」 운영을 성공적으로 마무리했다고 밝혔다. 이번 교육과정은 7월 6일부터 25일까지 총 34시간 동안 집중운영 됐으며, 순천제일고를 거점으로 금당고, 순천매산여고, 순천여고, 복성고 등 5개 고등학교 학생 34명이 참여했다.

교육 과정에는 ‘순천만’을 중심으로 환경 인식, 수계 구조 이해, 기후변화와 연계된 습지 생태의 역할, 지속가능한 사회에 대한 고찰 등의 내용이 담겼다. 대학 캠퍼스 강의실·연구실과 순천만 일원에서 생태·기후 이론 수업(15시간), 실험·탐구 활동(6시간), 팀 프로젝트(7월 23~25일) 등이 다채롭게 진행되었다. 교육 후 실시된 수강생 만족도 조사 결과는 4.46점(5점 만점)을 기록하며 높은 만족도를 보였다. 참여 학생들은 “수업 시간을 늘려 더욱 다양한 활동이 이어지길 희망한다”고 밝혔다.

「기후변화와 순천만」은 2022년 국립대학육성사업의 지원으로 국립순천대학교가 개발한 고교학점제 지역특화 교과목으로, 2023년부터는 순천제일고 정규 교과과정에 편성되어 공동교육과정으로 운영되고 있다. 국립순천대는 순천시, 순천교육지원청, 순천제일고, (사)전남동부지역사회연구소 등과 협의체를 구성해 매년 커리큘럼을 점검·개선하고 있다.

특히 올해는 순천시가 교육특구로 지정됨에 따라 운영 지원이 ‘교원 연수’와 ‘강사 양성’까지 확대됐다. 

지난 5월에는 순천제일고 주관으로 순천만생태문화교육원에서 교사 연수와 강사 양성 과정이 운영되었고, 7월에는 교육을 수료한 대학생 예비 강사를 대상으로 프로젝트 기반 교수법 개발 워크숍도 진행되었다. 마지막 날 열린 발표회에서 참여 교사들은 “문학과 과학 등 다양한 교과가 융합된 수업 구성, 팀티칭과 프로젝트 중심 수업이 학생들의 환경 인식 제고에 효과적”이라고 긍정적으로 평가했다.

고교학점제 지역특화 교육과정 운영지원 국립대육성사업 책임자인 환경교육과 강형일 교수는 “지역의 생태 자원을 교육과정에 적극 반영하는 것은 공교육 강화와 미래 인재 양성의 중요한 실천”이라며 “앞으로도 지역사회와 협력해 교육과 연구 활동에 적극 나설 것”이라고 말했다

한편, 국립순천대학교 교수팀은 앞서 ‘고교학점제 선도지구 지역특화 공동 교육과정 운영 실행 연구(강형일 등, 2024)’을 통해 지역특화 고교학점제 운영 전반에 대한 개선점과 새 방향을 제시한 바 있다. 국립순천대학교는 앞으로도 참여 고교, 지자체, 교육기관과 협력해 교과 운영 주체별 역할 분담, 커리큘럼 보완, 학생 의견 반영 등을 통해 지역 기반 고교학점제 운영 모델을 지속 발전시켜 나갈 계획이다.

SCNU Successfully Concludes Localized High School Credit System Course “Climate Change and Suncheon Bay”

- Collaboration with Suncheon City and local high schools to foster local talent through ecology-based education

- Expanded to include teacher training and university student instructor preparation with Suncheon’s designation as a Special Education District 

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) announced the successful completion of its 2025 academic year localized high school credit system course “Climate Change and Suncheon Bay,” conducted in partnership with Suncheon City and Suncheon Jeil High School. The program ran intensively from July 6 to 25 for a total of 34 hours, with 34 students from five high schools ? Suncheon Jeil High School, Geumdang High School, Suncheon Maesan Girls’ High School, Suncheon Girls’ High School, and Bokseong High School ? participating.

The curriculum focused on topics related to Suncheon Bay, including environmental awareness, watershed structure, the role of wetland ecosystems in connection with climate change, and reflections on a sustainable society. Activities were held both in SCNU’s lecture halls and laboratories as well as on-site in the Suncheon Bay area, encompassing 15 hours of ecology and climate theory, six hours of experiments and inquiry activities, and a team project (July 23?25). A post-course satisfaction survey recorded an average score of 4.46 out of 5, with participants expressing hope for extended class hours and more diverse activities.

“Climate Change and Suncheon Bay” was developed by SCNU in 2022 with support from the National University Development Project as a localized curriculum for the high school credit system. Since 2023, it has been included in the regular curriculum of Suncheon Jeil High School and operated as a joint education program. SCNU collaborates annually with Suncheon City, the Suncheon Office of Education, Suncheon Jeil High School, and the Jeonnam Eastern Region Community Research Institute to review and improve the curriculum.

This year, with Suncheon designated as a Special Education District, the program’s scope expanded to include teacher training and instructor preparation. In May, teacher training and instructor development courses were held at the Suncheon Bay Ecological and Cultural Education Center under the direction of Suncheon Jeil High School. In July, SCNU hosted a workshop for university student trainee instructors to develop project-based teaching methods. At the final presentation session, participating teachers positively evaluated the integration of literature, science, and other disciplines, as well as the effectiveness of team-teaching and project-based lessons in enhancing students’ environmental awareness.

Professor Kang Hyeong-il of the Department of Environmental Education, project director for the National University Development Program’s support of localized high school credit system courses, stated, “Actively incorporating local ecological resources into the curriculum is an important practice for strengthening public education and fostering future talent. We will continue to collaborate with the local community in both education and research.”

Earlier, SCNU’s faculty team published the Study on the Implementation of Localized Joint Education Courses in High School Credit System Pilot Districts (Kang Hyeong-il et al., 2024), which proposed improvements and new directions for localized high school credit system operations. Moving forward, SCNU plans to work closely with participating high schools, local governments, and educational institutions to refine curriculum design, clarify the roles of each operating body, and incorporate student feedback to further develop a sustainable, region-based high school credit system model.
