국립순천대학교(총장 이병운) 대학생 사회봉사단은‘함께 걷는 길, 깨끗한 순천’을 슬로건으로, 연말까지 매주 금·토요일에 환경 정화 활동을 펼치며 지역사회 플로깅 문화 정착에 앞장설 계획이라고 31일 밝혔다.

사회봉사단은 2021학년도부터 정기적인 플로깅 활동을 시행해 왔으며, 지난해에는 1,683명이 봉사활동에 참여했다. 다양한 마을 봉사 및 교육 봉사 활동을 통해 지역사회에 기여한 결과, 2022년 여수MBC-라이온스 청소년 봉사상에서 단체 우수상을 수상한 바 있다.

국립순천대학교 사회봉사단은 지난 28일부터 온라인 홍보를 시작했으며, 매 회 약 60명의 학생들이 순천 지역 쓰레기 줍기 활동과 환경 보호 캠페인을 펼치고 있다. 올해 플로깅 활동은 12월 말까지 총 45차례에 걸쳐 약 1,700명 이상의 대학생이 참여할 예정이다.

국립순천대학교 정정조 사회봉사단장(학생처장)은“대학의 연구 및 교육 활동 범위가 확장됨에 따라 봉사 범위도 확대할 필요가 있고, 첨단소재 광양캠퍼스와 우주항공 및 그리스마트팜 특화 분야의 고흥캠퍼스까지 봉사 영역을 넓혀 글로컬 대학으로서의 입지를 더욱 확고히 하겠다”고 전했다.

또한 사회봉사단장인 황예지 학생(법학과 4학년)은 “이번 플로깅 캠페인이 환경 보호뿐 아니라 자발적인 봉사 문화를 정착시키는 계기가 되기를 바란다”며 “앞으로도 다양한 활동을 통해 지역과의 상생을 이어가겠다”고 전했다.

이번 활동은 학생 주도의 봉사 문화를 확산하고, 환경 문제 해결에 기여하는 것을 목표로 하며, 활발한 참여와 지역사회의 지지를 통해 긍정적 변화를 만들어갈 것으로 기대된다.

한편, 순천대 사회봉사단은 플로깅 외에도 올해 지역 아동 및 취약계층을 위한 봉사 프로그램도 기획해 추진할 예정이다.

SCNU Student Volunteer Corps Leads Weekly Plogging Campaign for a Cleaner Suncheon

Suncheon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) announced that its Student Volunteer Corps has launched a weekly environmental campaign under the slogan “Walking Together for a Cleaner Suncheon.” The program will run every Friday and Saturday until the end of the year, aiming to promote community-based plogging culture across the region.

Since 2021, the volunteer corps has organized regular plogging and community service activities. In 2023 alone, over 1,683 students participated. Their continued efforts earned the group the Outstanding Group Award at the 2022 Yeosu MBC?Lions Youth Volunteer Awards.

The 2024 campaign began with an online outreach initiative on March 28. Each session involves around 60 students, engaging in litter collection and environmental awareness activities across the city of Suncheon. A total of 45 sessions are scheduled this year, with more than 1,700 students expected to participate.

According to Professor Jeong Jeong-jo, Director of the SCNU Student Affairs Office and Head of the Volunteer Corps, the university plans to expand volunteer efforts to new satellite campuses, including the Advanced Materials Gwangyang Campus and the Aerospace and Smart Farming-focused Goheung Campus, reinforcing its role as a Glocal University. 

Yeji Hwang, a fourth-year law student and student leader of the volunteer corps, emphasized the campaign’s dual focus on environmental protection and fostering a culture of student-led service. In addition to plogging, the volunteer corps is also planning outreach programs for local children and underserved communities throughout the year.
