- 글로컬대학30 연계 ‘한국학·남도학 융합 교육’, 전통과 근대를 잇는 체험 중심 운영으로 지역 이해도 제고

- 16개국 33명 유학생 참여… 정주 역량 강화 및 다문화 교류 확대 기대

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)는 지난 6월 27일(금)과 28일(토), 16개국 외국인 유학생 33명을 대상으로 ‘남도 생활문화 이해 교육 프로그램(1차)’을 성황리에 운영했다고 밝혔다. ‘어서와, 남도는 처음이지?’라는 제목으로 진행된 이번 프로그램은 한국학과 지역학(남도학)을 통합한 체험형 교육 과정으로, 유학생들이 남도의 역사와 문화를 입체적으로 이해할 수 있도록 이론 강의와 현장 탐방을 병행해 구성되었다.

1차 프로그램은 ‘남도의 생활문화’를 주제로, 조선시대부터 근대에 이르기까지 한국 지역문화의 연속성과 특색을 체험하도록 꾸려졌다. 방글라데시, 미얀마, 베트남, 파키스탄, 중국, 카자흐스탄, 나이지리아, 카메룬, 튀르키예 등 다양한 문화 배경을 지닌 유학생들은 첫날 특강을 통해 전라남도의 역사적 맥락과 문화적 특성을 학습하고, 이튿날에는 순천과 보성 일대를 중심으로 현장 학습에 나섰다.

유학생들은 문화유산 전문 해설사의 안내를 받아 낙안읍성, 천연염색 체험장, 뿌리깊은나무박물관, 수오당, 벌교 근대골목(보성여관, 열화정, 이진래 고택 등)을 차례로 방문하며, 남도의 전통 생활과 근현대 유산을 가까이서 살펴보고, 지역 공동체의 생활문화를 생생하게 경험했다.

특히 낙안읍성에서는 조선시대부터 이어져 온 전통 주거 문화를 직접 살펴보고, 대취타와 사물놀이 공연 관람, 천연 염색 체험 등을 통해 한국의 예술과 민속문화를 직접 체험했다. 벌교 근대골목에서는 조정래의 대하소설 『태백산맥』의 배경인 보성여관을 비롯해 일제강점기 근대 건축물들을 둘러보며 당시의 시대상은 물론, 지역의 역사성과 공동체 문화를 더욱 깊게 이해하는 시간을 가졌다.

카자흐스탄 출신의 화학공학과 유학생 슴밧(Symbat)은 “책에서만 보던 한국 전통 가옥과 역사 공간을 직접 보고, 조별로 미션을 수행하면서 생생한 배움을 얻었다”라며, “낙안읍성은 이전에도 방문한 적이 있었지만, 이번에는 해설과 강의를 통해 그 의미를 더욱 깊이 이해할 수 있었다”라고 소감을 전했다.

서강석 국제교류교육본부장은 “외국인 유학생들이 지역 문화유산의 가치와 의미를 직접 체험하며, 한국과 지역사회를 더 깊게 이해할 수 있었기를 바란다”라며, “앞으로도 유학생들이 지역사회와 상생하며 안정적으로 정주할 수 있도록 다문화 역량 강화와 지역통합을 위한 교육프로그램을 꾸준히 개발해 나가겠다”라고 말했다.

한편, 국립순천대학교 국제교류교육본부는 교육부 글로컬대학30 사업의 일환으로, 외국인 유학생의 지역 적응력 향상과 글로벌 지역 인재로의 성장을 지원하기 위해 체험형·참여형 교육프로그램을 지속적으로 운영할 계획이다.

“Welcome to Namdo!” Sunchon National University Hosts Cultural Immersion Program for International Students

Sunchon National University (President Lee Byung-woon) successfully held the first session of its “Understanding Namdo Culture” program for international students on June 27?28. Titled “Welcome to Namdo!”, the program brought together 33 students from 16 countries for a two-day experience combining lectures and field trips, aimed at deepening their understanding of the region’s cultural heritage.

The program, part of the university’s Glocal University 30 initiative, focused on Namdo’s traditional lifestyle and culture, highlighting its continuity from the Joseon Dynasty to the modern era. Students from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Pakistan, China, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Cameroon, T?rkiye, and other countries engaged in special lectures on the historical and cultural context of Jeollanam-do on the first day, followed by an immersive field study across Suncheon and Boseong on the second.

With guidance from professional cultural heritage interpreters, participants visited major sites including Naganeupseong Folk Village, a natural dyeing workshop, the Deep Rooted Tree Museum, Suodang (a Confucian shrine), and the Beolgyo Modern Alley. Through these visits, they explored both traditional rural lifestyles and Korea’s modern historical legacy in the southern region.

At Naganeupseong, students experienced Korea’s traditional housing culture, watched performances of daechwita and samulnori (traditional Korean music and percussion), and participated in a hands-on natural dyeing activity. In Beolgyo, they toured historical landmarks such as the Boseong Inn?featured in Jo Jung-rae’s epic novel Taebaek Mountain Range?and various Japanese colonial-era buildings, gaining deeper insights into both the local community and Korea’s modern history.

Symbat, a chemical engineering student from Kazakhstan, shared, “It was incredible to see Korea’s traditional houses and historical sites that I had only read about in books. Participating in team-based activities gave me a vivid and meaningful learning experience. I had visited Naganeupseong before, but this time, the guided explanation and lecture helped me understand its cultural significance much more deeply.”

Seo Kang-seok, Director of the Office of International Affairs, remarked, “We hope this program gave our international students an opportunity to experience the value and meaning of Korea’s regional heritage firsthand and gain a deeper understanding of Korean society.” He added, “We will continue to develop inclusive educational programs that help international students integrate into local communities and grow as global citizens rooted in the region.”

This initiative is part of the Ministry of Education’s Glocal University 30 project. Sunchon National University plans to continue offering immersive and participatory programs to support international students’ cultural adaptation and regional engagement, while nurturing future global leaders grounded in local knowledge.
