Developing Multicultural Art Education Curriculum for Teaching Non-Art Major Students

South Korea is becoming more of a multicultural society due to the increase of trade, the influx of foreign labourers, the increase of international marriages, and globalization. The term, “multiculturalism” has become a familiar term in South Korean. Multicultural education is promoted by many South Korean scholars and educators as an effective means by which to solve the many issues now occurring from the social, cultural and ethnic diversity in South Korea. My research and approach to the issues of diversity, is relevant to multiculturalism, most of the research focusing on the K-12 levels in education (elementary, middle, and high school). There are few multicultural art education programs for college students or adults in South Korea. The programs in existence are commonly used to introduce foreign cultures by using traditional art making and study, such as mask making, traditional clothing design, and doll making. Multicultural art education could be expanded into higher education curriculum to include university students and continuing education for non-traditional adult students, to cover and realize more fully the goals of multicultural education. The aim of this paper is to introduce multicultural art education lessons implemented by two international art instructors working at a university located in the United States who have implemented their multicultural art education program for more than two years. The art classes in this program are designed for non-art major students and are one of the more popular courses offered at the university. Even though the lessons in this paper are made for a particular social setting and purpose, by sharing the art lessons taught in the program, I have hope that the South Korean multi- cultural art education program will expand the scope of their curriculum so the goals of mul- ticulturalism meet the needs of the diversity in the country

한국 사회는 더욱더 다문화 사회가 되어가고 있다. ‘다문화’라는 단어도 한국에서 더 이상 낯 선 단어가 아니다. 다문화 교육도 한국에서 많은 학자들로 인해 소개되고 교육현장에서도 이 루어지고 있다. 대부분의 다문화 교육은 초중고등 학생들 대상으로 이루어지고 있다. 다문화 미술교육도 대부분 그러하다. 이 연구에서는 미술교육을 전공하지 않는 일반 대학생들을 위한 다문화 미술교육 프로그램을 만들어서 적용하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 각 개인이 속한 다른 문 화나 다양한 가치를 수용하여 표현하는 다문화 미술 프로그램을 개발하였으며 실제로 미국 대 학생들에게 적용하였다. 이 논문은 다문화 교육이라는 렌즈를 통한 미술 교육에 초점을 맞추 고 3주간의 제안된 수업 계획과 함께 다문화 미술커리큘럼을 적용한 사례로 대학생들에게 긍 정적 피드백과 높은 강의 만족도를 도출하였다. 비록 다른 나라 대학생들을 대상으로 실시된 다문화 미술교육 프로그램이지만 한국 교육현장에서도 소개되어 충분히 응용이 되고 발전되기 를 희망한다.
