To Develop Competent Human Resources

  • In 1935 Sunchon Public Agricultural School was established on a site donated by Jong-ik Kim, who wanted to develop competent human resources and instill national consciousness. Later, the school's name was changed, respectively, to Sunchon Agricultural Middle School (1946), Sunchon Agricultural High School (1951), Sunchon Agricultural Technical School (1965), Sunchon Agricultural Special School (1973), Sunchon Agricultural Technical College (1979) as a higher educational institution, and finally a 4-year university in 1982 with ten departments including the Department of Agriculture Science. In 1987, the University set up a graduate school with a master’s course and in 1991 became a university both in name and reality, composed of five colleges.
  • Later, the University added the Graduate School of Education (1993), Industrial Graduate School (1994), Business and Administration Graduate School (1995), Graduate School of Information Science (1996), and Ph.D. courses in 1994. In the same year, the University established the SCNU Scholarship Foundation with KRW 10 billion donated by Pohang Iron & Steel, the School of Continuing Education in 1998, which has contributed to development of local communities together with the Agriculture Education Center and Language School, and also the SCNU Library and the Information & Computing Center in 2001 together with e-Library, which are serving as a source of knowledge and information in the community.
  • With intensive efforts put into internal innovation, the University has been designated as a specialized agricultural university and selected for the Brain Korea 21 project by the government. In 2000, the University was ranked 17th among 182 universities in the financial support evaluation by the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development and also selected as one of the ten most innovative schools among 44 national universities. In 2002 the University was designated as Excellent Education and Research School in the national university performance evaluation for self-development plans.
