About the Department

Home page

This study of laws and social phenomena is one of the most traditional fields of study such as philosophy, because it searches for justice. The purpose of the study in law is to establish justice, which explains why the old slogan of the Department is ‘Defend! Justice! Democracy! Laws!’
In acknowledgment of this weighty mission, our professors use the traditional methodology of legal education but at the same time endeavor to study current social phenomena with the students. While pursuit of justice is the ideal of law, the study of laws is practical also. Thus, Feuerbach, famous jurist, had changed his major from philosophy to law for a living after getting married. In Korea too, the most brilliant students in humanities and social science tend to choose this major, for studying law can help them enter various areas of society where they can work as leaders of the nation.
Studying law allows students to analyze social phenomena objectively and solve social problems actively with the initiative. As an expert in laws, students will play an important role in socio-economic fields, leveraging their professional knowledge and expertise. This is because there is no socioeconomic activity irrelevant to legal matters. Needless to say, majors in laws play an important role in the civil service system as well.
More specifically, you can be a judge, prosecutor, or a lawyer by passing the bar examination (law school), or a high-ranking civil servant by passing the Public Administration Examination or Legislative Examination. Passing the Civil Service Examination, you can be Grade 7 or Grade 9 civil servant, or work in the Public Prosecutors' Office, court, correctional institution, Immigration Bureau, fire station, the Meteorological Administration, or the army. Other available professions include being an employee of the Korea Legal Aid Corporation, financial institutions, mass media organizations, enterprises, etc., as well as a judicial scrivener, patent attorney, certified public appraiser, damage adjuster, paralegal, and so forth.
In an effort to support our students in achieving their goals, we offer an additional scholarship system. The Gusan Scholarship (by Professor Jong-yeong Gwak) is provided to enrolled students of the Department during the Beopcheonje Festival, and the Beommin Scholarship (by Ui-bin Hwang, CEO of Hyeokseong Industrial) is offered to those who have passed the preliminary national bar examination (or legislative examination) and studying under difficult circumstances.
Besides the Beopcheonje Festival, other scholarships are arranged and provided by the graduates of the school, including the Samseong Fire Work Scholarship and the Alumni Scholarship. Moreover, the development fund for the Department of Law has been prepared and used for scholarships, constantly increasing the amount of scholarships awarded to students.
If you aspire to play a significant role for the nation and society as a key leader, pursue your dream by majoring in law at the Division of Public Service, Sunchon National University.
