- 국립순천대·국립목포대·전라남도·지자체·의료계 위원 참여하는 공동준비위원회 발족

… 새정부 출범에 따라 유치건의활동 적극 전개

국립순천대학교(총장 이병운)와 국립목포대학교(총장 송하철)는 5월 26일 오전 11시 전남 장흥 통합의학컨벤션센터에서 ‘국립순천대학교·국립목포대학교 통합의대 설립 공동준비위원회(이하 공동준비위원회)’ 출범식을 개최하고, 전남 국립의과대학 설립을 위한 본격적인 준비 체계에 착수했다고 밝혔다.

공동준비위원회는 국립순천대학교·국립목포대학교·전라남도가 함께 구성한 공식 조직으로, 국립의과대학 설립을 위한 체계적인 추진 기반 마련과 정부·국회·의료계를 대상으로 한 설득 활동, 외곽 지원 단체 및 유관 기관과의 협력 강화를 담당하게 된다.

양 대학 대외협력부총장을 공동위원장으로, 기획처장과 전라남도 인재육성교육국장을 당연직 위원으로 두며, 순천시·목포시 부시장, 지역 의료기관장, 양 대학 동문회 관계자 등 총 13명으로 구성되었다. 또한, 산하에 전문가위원회와 실무위원회를 두어 체계적인 의대 설립을 추진할 계획이다.

이날 출범식에는 국립순천대학교 이병운 총장, 국립목포대학교 송하철 총장, 전라남도 명창환 행정부지사를 비롯해 공동위원장인 ▲문승태 대외협력부총장(순천대) ▲이상찬 대외협력부총장(목포대) 그리고 위원인 ▲김종우 근로복지공단 순천병원장 ▲최형호 목포시의료원장 ▲정광현 순천시 부시장 대참 이기정 청년교육국장 ▲이상진 목포시 부시장(목포시장 권한대행) ▲김선주 사무총장(국립순천대학교 총동문회) ▲오창현 회장(국립목포대학교 총동문회) ▲오현민 기획처장(순천대) ▲송창용 기획처장(목포대) ▲강종철 인재육성교육국장(전라남도) ▲박병희 의과대학설립추진단장(순천대) ▲유천 의과대학설립추진부단장(목포대)이 참석했으며, 위원회 출범을 기념하는 행사와 함께 향후 추진 과제에 대한 현안 회의가 이어졌다.

참석자들은 출범식 세리머니에서 “국립순천대·국립목포대”, “통합대학교 국립의과대학 설립”, “상생+화합”, “통합의대 설립”, “공동준비위원회가 앞장선다”의 문구가 적힌 손피켓을 들고 출범 의지를 다졌다. 이어서 열린 공동준비위원회 회의에서는 ▲의대설립 추진 경과보고 ▲공동위원회 추가 구성 및 산하 실무위원회 구성·운영안 등 주요 안건을 논의하였다.

국립순천대학교 이병운 총장은 “양 대학은 통합을 통해 국립의과대학을 유치하고, 이를 기반으로 필수 의료 인력을 양성하여 지역의료 체계를 근본적으로 개선해 나가겠다는 공동의 목표를 가지고 있다”라며, “이번 공동준비위원회 출범이 정부, 국회, 의료계를 포함한 보건의료 정책 핵심 주체들과의 연대와 공감 형성을 이끄는 실질적 협력의 출발점이 되기를 기대한다”라고 밝혔다.

한편, 전라남도는 전국에서 유일하게 의과대학이 없는 광역자치단체로, 지역 내 의료기본권과 응급의료 대응에 심각한 불균형을 겪고 있다. 이에 따라 전라남도를 대표하는 양 대학은 지난 2024년 11월, 전남의 화합과 미래를 위한 ‘통합의대 설립’에 합의하고, 공동 행보를 이어오고 있다.

SCNU and MNU Launch Joint Committee for Establishing Integrated National Medical School

Sunchon National University (SCNU, President Lee Byung-woon) and Mokpo National University (President Song Ha-cheol) held a joint launching ceremony on May 26 at the Jangheung Integrative Medicine Convention Center to announce the official start of the “Joint Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of the Integrated National Medical School.” The committee marks the beginning of a full-fledged effort to establish a national medical school in the Jeollanam-do region.

The committee is a formal body jointly formed by SCNU, Mokpo National University, and Jeollanam-do Province. It will lay the strategic groundwork for the medical school’s establishment, engage in policy outreach with the government and National Assembly, and strengthen cooperation with external stakeholders and institutions.

Thirteen members comprise the committee, including vice presidents for external affairs from both universities and senior officials from Jeollanam-do and related sectors. Subcommittees such as an expert advisory group and working-level team will also be established to support systematic implementation.

During the launch, participants reaffirmed their shared commitment to addressing regional healthcare disparities through the creation of a national medical school. The subsequent meeting focused on key issues, including reviewing progress, structuring subcommittees, and coordinating future activities.

SCNU President Lee emphasized that the integration of the two universities aims not only to secure a national medical school but also to foster essential medical personnel and strengthen the regional healthcare system. He expressed hope that this joint effort will catalyze practical collaboration with national policy leaders in the health and medical sectors.
